Augsburg pours it on for first win in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. -- Quarterback Cade Sheehan (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) threw five touchdown passes, including three to wide receiver Dominic Smith (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), as the Augsburg University football team gained its first win of the season, a 54-14 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg scored the first 33 points of the game, scoring touchdowns on five of its first six drives. The Auggies outgained the Saints by a 305-100 margin in the first half, en route to a dominant 504-255 advantage in total offensive yards. Augsburg ran 80 offensive plays in the game, gaining an average of 6.3 yards per-play.
• Making his fourth collegiate start at quarterback, Sheehan had a five-touchdown day for the second time this season, completing 22-of-28 passes for 279 yards. He completed 14-of-16 passes for 201 yards and four touchdown passes in the first half, as the Auggies built a 33-7 advantage at the break.
• Smith caught seven passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns -- scores of 22 and 27 yards in the second quarter, and a 27-yarder in the third quarter. Braden Tretter (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) caught 11 passes for 94 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter, and Josiah Ferguson (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) caught three passes for 41 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown catch late in the first quarter.
• Augsburg had a balanced offensive attack, with 299 passing yards and 205 rushing yards -- its most rushing yards in a game since a 257-yard effort in the final game of the 2015 season (a 49-42 home win over Bethel). Augsburg's 504 yards of total offense were its most in a game since a 557-yard performance in a 36-34 loss to Carleton on Oct. 13, 2018.
• Five different Auggies rushed for 25 yards or more, led by Isaiah Thompson (SO, Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes HS), who gained 46 yards on 10 carries, scoring on a two-yard touchdown run to cap Augsburg's opening drive of the game. Sheehan gained 42 yards on eight runs, and Drew Dean (FY, McGregor, Minn./McGregor HS) gained 40 yards on nine carries, scoring on a one-yard run late in the game.
• Augsburg's defense got into the scoring as well, as Steven Hentosh (FY, Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley HS) scored on a 20-yard interception return early in the fourth quarter, Augsburg's second interception return for a touchdown this season.
• The Auggie defense limited St. Scholastica to just 58 passing yards and 197 rushing yards in the game. Augsburg recorded four quarterback sacks -- solo sacks by Dalton Miller (JR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS), Hamsa Kahin (FY, Edina, Minn./Edina HS) and Justin Tverberg (SO, Farmington, Minn./Hastings HS) and a split sack by Shaquille Young (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) and Leban Kahin (FY, Edina, Minn./Edina HS). The Auggies recorded 10 tackles for-loss in the game.
• Miller led the Auggies with nine tackles (six solo), a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry, while Hamsa Kahin had eight tackles (three solo) and Tverberg had eight tackles (three solo). Young recorded a fumble recovery. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• In four collegiate starts, including the lone game of the 2020-21 season this past spring, Sheehan has now completed 90-of-145 passes for 1,158 yards (289.5 yards per-game) and 14 touchdowns against six interceptions.
• Augsburg's 54-point effort marked its most points scored in a game since a 57-35 win over St. Olaf on Oct. 24, 2015, and its 40-point margin of victory was its biggest since a 62-10 win over Concordia-Wisconsin on Sept. 4, 2010.
• The game marked the first-ever meeting between Augsburg and St. Scholastica, which joined the MIAC this season.

FOR THE FOES
• Bryceton Butkiewicz rushed 27 times for 136 yards and a third-quarter touchdown for St. Scholastica.
• Byron Bishop completed 9-of-24 passes for 58 yards and a second-quarter touchdown to Ty Glvance.
• Jake Kukowski had 11 tackles (three solo), and Anthony Vo had 11 tackles (two solo) for the Saints.
