Auggie men open MIAC play with 2OT victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Nick Zuchowski (JR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored the lone goal of the contest 6:16 into the second overtime, giving the Augsburg University men's soccer team its sixth straight victory to open the season, a 1-0 triumph at Hamline University in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Hamline 0 (2OT)
LOCATION: Paterson Field, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-0-0 overall (1-0-0 MIAC), Hamline 2-4-0 overall (0-1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Zuchowski scored his first goal of the season and 12th of his career at the 106:16 mark, a rising shot to the top left corner of the net from about 25 yards out.
• The Auggies scored the game-winner with just 10 players on the pitch, after a red-card ejection in the 79th minute. However, Hamline had a player ejected on a red card in the 97th minute to level the playing field in overtime.
• Augsburg held a 24-14 advantage in shots in the game, but goalkeeper Oscar Herrera (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had to come up big for the Auggies on several occasions, making five saves, including one on a Hamline penalty kick in the 61st minute.
• Kobby Owu (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) had six shots for the Auggies, while Zuchowski, Alex Giles (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights HS) and Tomas Piza-Gonzalez (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Hiawatha Collegiate HS) had three shots each.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's 6-0-0 start marks the first time it has started a season with six straight wins since the 2006 campaign, when the Auggies won their first six games and went unbeaten in their first 10 games (8-0-2), en route to a 13-3-3 campaign.

FOR THE FOES
• Luke Rimington had eight saves in goal for Hamline.
• Logan Weller had five shots in the game for the Pipers.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We faced some adversity today and found a way to overcome it and get the three points we deserved. When you don't put away your good chances, you have to do more work. We should have buried four or so in the first half alone, but Hamline was really committed to defending the box and their guys gave everything to block shots and disrupt us in that space. Every time we play at Hamline, it's a dogfight."
• "The red card to Drew Collins changed the game for a bit, and that unfortunately puts us without our captain against Macalester on Saturday. We didn't change much with 10 players and still created chances. Fortunately, they had a guy tossed in 97th minute to give us some reprieve in overtime."
• "For as much as we dictated the game, Oscar Herrera was still the hero, because he had to come up with three massive saves. He made a positional save in the first half from inside six yards, and then stopped a penalty in the second half. Then he won a 1v1v duel with Logan Weller late in the game, and that's a tough task because Weller is an out and out goalscorer."
• "Nick Zuchowski is good. They tried to mark him out of the game, but he just found new spaces. When he found the ball in that last moment, I knew it was over. He's so polished from that area, and it was an outstanding goal."
