MINNEAPOLIS --
Kobby Owu (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) scored his fifth goal of the season in the 30th minute, and the Augsburg University men's soccer team used a solid effort on all sides of the ball to record its seventh straight win and fourth straight shutout, remaining unbeaten with a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Macalester College on Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Macalester 0
LOCATION: Paterson Field, St. Paul, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 7-0-0 overall (2-0-0 MIAC), Macalester 3-4-0 overall (1-1-0 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Owu put the Auggies ahead at the 29:40 mark, playing the ball and making several moves inside the 18-yard box before firing a blast from 15 yards out.
• Augsburg was outshot by a 16-7 margin in the game, but a solid defensive backfield, led by sweeper
Spencer Enright (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS),
Jorge Radilla Elizalde (SO, Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Marco Corona-Duran (JR, Fridley, Minn./St. Louis Park HS), protected goalkeeper
Oscar Herrera (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS), who claimed his third shutout of the season with a four-save effort. Enright, Radilla Elizalde, Corona-Duran and center-midfielder
Nick Zuchowski (JR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) all played the full 90 minutes in the game. Macalester held a 53-to-47-percent advantage on possession, putting increased pressure on the Auggies in the final minutes, but Augsburg's defense held firm.
• Owu had three of Augsburg's seven shots in the game.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg's seventh win marks the team's third-longest winning streak to open a season in school history, with the two longest season-opening winning streaks occurring in MIAC championship seasons -- 1975 (10 wins) and 1973 (11 wins). It's the eighth time in school history that Augsburg has been unbeaten in its first seven games; the longest unbeaten streak to start a season was 16 games (11-0-5) in 1978, a season where the Auggies finished 11-1-5.
• Augsburg has outscored its opponents by an 18-3 margin, and last surrendered a goal at the 1:50 mark of its 2-1 win over Puget Sound (Wash.) on Sept. 4. The Auggies now have a shutout streak of 464:26, spanning parts of five games.
FOR THE FOES
• Jack Mueller, Ben Wagner and Hans Haenicke had three shots each for Macalester.
• Cade Fink had two saves in goal for the Scots.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "MIAC games are so tough, so for us to grind out a 1-0 win against a good Macalester team was fantastic, especially at this early stage of the season. This game had some really good moments from us on the ball and some moments where we had to be staunch in defense of our goal. We had some luck, and we scored an incredible goal through
Kobby Owu. He beat four players by himself to score."
• "
Nick Zuchowski was once again a significant influencer on the game, as he ran the show on both sides of the ball from his deeper lying position in midfield.
Spencer Enright did what he needed to do for the team in covering for
Drew Collins at center back, and Tomas Piza Gonzalez had that sparkle in his eye once again. He created Kobby's opportunity through his hard work and I feel good things are coming for him."
• "Oscar's distribution continues to help us and his confidence is at a high level, especially for such a young player. He's been so solid in goal this season."
• "Marco and Jorge were outstanding in the back -- just absolute rocks in their 1v1 duals and they covered so much ground blocking crosses, winning tackles, and doing whatever was needed for the team."
