Auggies cruise past Saint Mary's 3-0

MINNEAPOLIS -- A balanced team effort from the Augsburg University volleyball team spurred a three-set sweep over Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall. 

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg def. Saint Mary's 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-14)

RECORDS: Augsburg 8-4 overall (2-0 MIAC), St. Mary's 5-8 overall (1-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Saint Mary's climbed out to an early 7-1 lead in the first set, but the Auggies battled back and eventually took their first lead of the match at 12-11 after a six-point serving run by Corrina Evans (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS). The rest of the match was back-and-forth between the two teams and was tied 20-20, before Augsburg had a five-point run to finish the match and secure the 25-20 victory. Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) got the Auggies rolling in the second set, going on another six-point serving run, taking a 11-4 advantage. It was all Augsburg after that point in the match, and the Auggies went on to win the second set 25-18 and the third set 25-14.
• The Auggie offense had a well-balanced attack effort, with three players hitting above .500 -- Brianna Van Well (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) with 10 kills at .526, Evans with six kills at .545 and Lexie Lang (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) with five kills at .556. -- and earned a .333 attack percentage as a team. Augsburg held St. Mary's to a .075 attack percentage, with eight team blocks.
Kevin Boysen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), Jade Fullerton (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Evans all finished with three block assists, while Lang, Gjerde and Van Well all finished with two blocks. Gjerde had eight kills and digs for the Auggies, while Boysen added seven kills and Fullerton had five kills. Evans also chipped in four assists and two digs. 
• In addition to her five kills, Lang collected 28 assists and eight digs. Mikayla Coops (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) had nine digs, two assists and a service ace. 
Angel Khang (SO, Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had a career-best five service aces in the match, while adding team-best 10 digs and four assists. 
• Earning her first collegiate block assist was GK LeMonds (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), who also earned her second career kill. 

FOR THE FOES
• Leading the Cardinals' offense with 10 kills was Ciarra McNally, adding eight digs and two service aces.
• Mandy Schmidt collected 28 assists, while Dejaye Baab had match-best 13 digs.

• Augsburg travels to Waverly, Iowa for the Wartburg Invitational on Friday (9/24), facing off against Coe College at 5 p.m. and Wartburg College at 7 p.m.
