2OT triumph at Carleton sends Auggies to 9-0-0

NORTHFIELD -- The combination of Kobby Owu (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and Tomas Piza-Gonzalez (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Hiawatha Collegiate HS) struck for the second game in a row for the Augsburg University men's soccer team, as an incredible setup by Owu fed Piza-Gonzalez for a dramatic game-winning goal, in a 1-0, two-overtime victory for the Auggies at No. 22-ranked Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Carleton 0
LOCATION: Bell Field, Northfield, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 9-0-0 overall (4-0-0 MIAC), Carleton 5-2-2 overall (3-1-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game-winning goal came on a pair of incredible plays. Owu gained the ball deep in the Carleton 18-yard box, and worked the ball through two defenders to the left endline. He emerged and fed the ball to Piza-Gonzalez in the center of the box. Piza-Gonzalez made a move and fired the ball to the low left corner of the net with 2:54 left in the second overtime, giving Augsburg a dramatic win in a battle of unbeaten teams in the MIAC.
• Augsburg gained its sixth straight shutout victory, thanks to another impressive effort by the Auggie defense. Augsburg was outshot by a 19-12 margin in the game, including a 5-2 advantage in overtime, and Carleton also had 11 corner kicks to Augsburg's one, including four corner kicks in overtime. But goalkeeper Oscar Herrera (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) and the Auggie defense was up to the task, standing up to the Knights' pressure. Herrera had four saves in goal, and the Auggie defensive shell of Drew Collins (SO, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS), Marco Corona-Duran (JR, Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS), Jorge Radilla Elizalde (SO, Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS), with center midfielders Nick Zuchowski (JR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and Spencer Enright (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS), all had strong games. Collins, Corona-Duran and Radilla Elizalde played all 107 minutes in the game.
• Owu and Herbert Carrera (SO, Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick HS) had three shots each for the Auggies, with Alex Ruiz (SO, Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) recording two shots.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 22-3 margin, and last surrendered a goal at the 1:50 mark of its 2-1 win over Puget Sound (Wash.) on Sept. 4. The Auggies now have a shutout streak of 661:32, spanning parts of seven games.
• Augsburg snapped a 27-game unbeaten streak (21-0-6) for Carleton at its home pitch, Bell Field. The Knights' last loss at home was a 1-0 loss to Concordia-Moorhead on Sept. 30, 2017.

FOR THE FOES
• Alexi Thomas had two saves in goal for Carleton.
• Trevor Jones and Tarek Bos-Shadi had four shots each for the Knights.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH GREG HOLKER
• "It took us a while to adjust to the game, and that gave it some more value. Carleton was better in the first half, we were better in the second half -- and then overtime happened."
• "When good things are happening to a group, you embrace it and enjoy it. In that second overtime, Carleton could have put us away with all three of their chances, but our guys clung on tight to both grit and luck to survive and create the one chance we needed. Kobby is an insane talent, and he had Carleton guys hunting him all day. Yet he still found a way to evade two of them along the endline to put Tomas in the spot he needed to win the game for us. Just an incredible moment from two high-quality players."
• "Oscar needed to dig one out for us today to keep us alive, and he did it. He will learn a lot from his performance today, but ultimately he kept another clean sheet. Whatever the shutout streak is, he has played a significant role in it. Credit to the three guys in front of him as well -- Marco, Drew and Jorge have been really good in their 1v1 moments and they cover for each other so well. They did what was needed once again today."
• "There are no breaks in the MIAC, as we head to Collegeville Saturday for another difficult road game with Saint John's. They are a really talented group that can dominate anyone when they get rolling. For us, it's back to work."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (10/2) at 12:30 p.m., with an MIAC game at Saint John's.
• Carleton travels to face crosstown rival St. Olaf on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
