GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Augsburg University volleyball team opened its season with two victories at the Calvin University Labor Day Weekend Tournament, a three-set sweep of Kalamazoo (Mich.) and a win in four sets over host Calvin (Mich.), the No. 3-ranked team in the preseason NCAA Division III national poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Augsburg rallied from a first-set loss to score the win over Calvin, ranked No. 3 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III preseason national poll. As in the opening match against Kalamazoo (Mich.), strong hitting provided a key to the victory for the Auggies. After hitting just .150 in the first set, the Auggies combined to hit .339 in the final three sets (45 kills, five errors in 118 attempts), en route to a .291 team attack percentage in the game. Calvin hit .225 in the match, but had 22 attack errors in its 173 attempts. Augsburg also converted 14 service aces in the match.
• Brianna Van Well (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) set single-match career highs for both kills (17) and attack percentage (.630), not committing an error in 27 attack attempts. 
• Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) had 14 kills and 14 digs for her 20th career kill-dig double-double, adding two block assists.
• Corrina Evans (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) recorded nine kills, adding a block assist and five assists.
• Lexie Lang (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) claimed her 11th career assist-dig double-double, with 40 assists and 13 digs, adding four service aces, five kills and a block assist.
• Jade Fullerton (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) had three kills and three blocks (one solo), and Mikayla Coops (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) had six kills, 12 digs and three service aces.
• Angel Khang ((SO, Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had 13 digs and three service aces, Maddie Nierengarten (SR, Foley, Minn./Princeton HS) had 13 digs and a service ace, and Torrie Rehder (FY, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) had three service aces.

FOR THE FOES
• Calvin was paced by Gabriella Kellogg, who had 12 kills, hitting .439. Heidi Westra had 16 kills and 16 digs, and Madelyn Hall had 11 kills and a solo block.
• Anna Schriemer had 51 assists and 21 digs for the Knights, and Aubrey Wrubel had 22 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• In a match that took just 62 minutes to complete, Augsburg was efficient in claiming the three-set sweep, hitting .395 with 44 kills, while also scoring 11 service aces and four team blocks. Four Auggies hit .400 or better in the match. Meanwhile, Kalamazoo hit minus-.015, with 15 kills and 16 attack errors.
• Brianna Van Well (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) had nine kills, hitting .467, with just two errors in 15 swings. Mikayla Coops (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) had eight kills, hitting .429, with two errors in 14 swings. She added six digs, two block assists and a service ace.
• Lexie Lang (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had seven kills, hitting .667, while adding five digs and 24 assists. Jade Fullerton (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) had seven kills, hitting .500, while scoring three blocks (one solo).
• Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) had six kills with five digs and a service ace, while Corrina Evans (SR, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) had four kills and a block assist.
• Maddie Nierengarten (SR, Foley, Minn./Princeton HS) had a team-best seven digs, while Angel Khang (SO, Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had four service aces and four digs.

FOR THE FOES
• Halley Johnson had three kills and four digs to lead Kalamazoo, while Claire Davis and Ann Lawrence also had three kills each.
• Davis and MacKenzy Maddock each had a block assist for the Hornets.
