Bobaric's hat trick lifts Auggies to victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jennifer Bobaric (JR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) claimed her first collegiate hat trick, scoring all three goals for Augsburg University in a 3-1 nonconference women's soccer victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, Wisconsin-La Crosse 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 2-0-1 overall, UW-La Crosse 2-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After surrendering a goal 4:25 into the game, Augsburg tied the game 91 seconds later, as Bobaric scored her first goal on a sprint downfield off a feed by Sam Donahugh (JR, Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago HS), sending a left-foot shot through the six-yard box to the right corner of the net.
• Bobaric's second goal came in the 50th minute, as she finished a counterattack off a midfield pass by Megan Hensel (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS), scoring on a similar shot to her first goal.
• Her hat trick came in the 60th minute, following a free kick from midfield by Jen Masello (SR, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South HS). Masello's free kick rebounded off the Eagle goalkeeper, and Bobaric pounced on the loose ball and slammed it home to give the Auggies a 3-1 advantage.
• Augsburg scored its three goals on just six shots -- five shots by Bobaric, one shot by Masello. UW-La Crosse outshot Augsburg by a 16-6 margin and had 14 corner kicks to none for Augsburg. The Eagles also held a 56-to-44-percent advantage in possession in the game.
• Augsburg's smothering defense kept UW-La Crosse from capitalizing on its shot advantage, as just seven of the 16 Eagles' shots were on-goal. Iz Shuster (SO, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) had six saves in goal for Augsburg to pick up the win, and the defense of Masello, Molly Conners (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), Julia Scully (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS), Malia Neumann (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and Tessa Ericksen (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) were solid in protection. Conners, Masello, Neumann and Scully played the full 90 minutes in the game.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Bobaric, who has all four goals scored by the Auggies this season, claimed the first hat trick by an Auggie since Gabriela Encarnacion scored three goals in a 3-0 win at Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 30, 2019.
• Tuesday's hat trick is the 14th for an Augsburg player in Mike Navarre's 23 seasons as the Auggies' head coach.

FOR THE FOES

• Ainsley Allan scored her second goal of the year for UW-La Crosse in the fifth minute. Her corner kick was deflected by an Augsburg defender, and she collected it for a rising shot to the goal.
• Allan and Katie Feller had three shots each for the Eagles, and Quinn Shannon had one save in goal.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "That was a great win for our team tonight. UW-La Crosse is one of the best programs in the region. We knew we had to raise our level tonight, and fortunately we did. The goals were very well constructed and Jennifer Bobaric was clinical in her finishing."
• "UW-Superior will be another type of test on Friday. Head Coach Allison DeGroot knows our program well, having served on our staff for five years before taking over the Superior program. I have tons of respect and admiration for how Allison leads; she has completely turned their program around to the point where they are now perennial contenders in the UMAC. Should be another fun night!"
