Auggies edge Royals to sweep MIAC series

BLAINE, Minn. – Behind goals from Gavin Holland (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and Erik Palmqvist (JR, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet), the No. 4-ranked Augsburg University men's hockey team completed a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep of Bethel University with a 3-2 win on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Holland gave the Auggies an early lead, striking for his team-leading 10th goal of the season just 27 seconds into play, assisted by Michael Redmon (JR, West Bloomfield, Mich./Centennial (Tenn.) HS) and Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS).
• The Royals tied the game with a goal at the 2:57 mark of the opening frame, but Blackowiak gave the Auggies the lead again at the 15:20 mark, scoring on a breakaway off assists from Lucas Niezelski (SR, Manchester, Conn./East Catholic HS) and Andrew Hicks (SO, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS).
• Bethel tied the game with a goal at the 13:29 mark of the second period, but Augsburg struck again at the 15:46 mark, as Palmquist deflected a shot from  Nick Woodward (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque HS)  into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Logan Kons (SO, Niles, Ill./Niles West HS) also assisted on the goal.
• Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 37-28 margin in the game.
Samuel Vyletelka (FY, Zilina, Slovakia/Grammar School of St. Francis of Assisii) picked up the win in goal, improving to 6-1-0 on the year with a 26-save effort.

FOR THE FOES
• Nick Ketola and Jarrett Cammarata scored goals for Bethel, with each adding assists for two-point nights.
• Ridge Gerads had 34 saves in goal for the Royals.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg is idle next weekend, and is back in action Jan. 28-29 with an MIAC series against St. Olaf.
