Strong second period lifts Auggies over Falcons

MINNEAPOLIS – Behind a pair of second period goals and a solid night between the pipes from Jack Robbel (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS), the No. 4-ranked Augsburg men's hockey team defeated the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 2-1 in nonconference action at Ed Saugestad Rink on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies controlled the pace of play in the first two periods, outshooting the Falcons 7-6 in the first and 18-4 in the second. The Falcons gained momentum in the third, outshooting the Auggies by a margin of 13-4.
Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) opened the scoring at the 2:47 mark in the second period to put the Auggies up 1-0 with assists going to Austin Dollimer (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) and Lucas Niezelski (SR, Macnchester, Conn./East Catholic HS).
Nick Woodward (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque HS) gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with what would prove to be the game-winner at the 13:36 mark in the second with Dollimer and Blackowiak picking up assists on the goal.
• With momentum leaning heavily in favor of the Falcons through most of the third period, the Auggies surrendered their first and only goal of the night at the 9:30 mark as they held on for the 2-1 win.
Michael Redmon (JR, West Bloomfield, Mich./Centennial HS) had four shots on-goal for the Auggies while Fritz Belisle (JR, Red Wing, Minn./Roseville Area HS) and Woodward had three each.
• Robbel was strong throughout the night for the Auggies, making 22 saves in the game including 12 in the third period alone.

FOR THE FOES
• Josh Martin was the only Falcon to find the back of the net with an unassisted goal in the third period.

• Augsburg will face No. 13-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Ed Saugestad Rink.
