Auggies top Pointers in overtime

MINNEAPOLIS – Thanks to a game-winning goal from Logan Kons (SO, Niles, Ill./Niles West HS), the No. 4-ranked Augsburg University men's hockey team edged the No. 13-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 4-3 in overtime on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Power-play goals were the theme of the first period as each team would get on the board with a man advantage. Stevens Points struck first at the 3:36 mark and Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) evened it up at the 19:52 mark with a goal assisted by Austin Dollimer (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS).
• The trend of power-play goals continued early in the second as Augsburg took its first lead with a power-play goal from Erik Palmqvist (JR, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet) assisted by Gavin Holland (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) and Dollimer. The Pointers tied it back up just over four minutes later and took the lead at the 7:37 mark in the third period.
• Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) tied the game back up at three each with just five minutes remaining with assists going to Grant Reichenbacher (JR, Verona, Wis./Madison Edgewood HS) and Michael Redmon (JR, West Bloomfield, Mich./Centennial HS).
• With the score still tied as regulation expired, the game headed to a 3-on-3 overtime period where Kons became the hero of the night for the Auggies with an unassisted game-winner 71 seconds into the extra period.
• The Auggies consistently threw pucks at the goal throughout the game, outshooting the Pointers by a margin of 39-26.
• Samuel Vyletelka (FY, Zilina, Slovakia/Grammar School of St. Francis of Assisi) made 23 saves for the Auggies on 26 shots faced on the night.

FOR THE FOES
• Conor Witherspoon, Fletcher Anderson, and Harrison Stewart all recorded goals for the Pointers.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday, Jan. 14 when they host Bethel University at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
