Auggies edged in back-and-forth battle

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- In a game where the two teams combined for more than 900 yards of total offense, host St. Olaf College held off a late Augsburg University rally in a 41-36 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The two teams combined to score on 13 of their 20 possessions in the game, with St. Olaf outgaining Augsburg by a 460-448 margin. Augsburg averaged 6.2 yards per-play on its 72 offensive plays, while St. Olaf averaged 6.1 yards per-play on its 75 plays.
• St. Olaf scored on its first seven possessions, with five touchdowns and a field goal, to take a 41-29 lead with 14:09 left in the game. Augsburg used a seven-play, 66-yard drive to cut the lead to 41-36 on a two-yard touchdown run by DJ Monroe (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) with 2:21 left to play. After forcing St. Olaf to punt after a "three-and-out" on its next drive, Augsburg gained the ball at its own 43-yard line with 1:47 left. The Auggies drove to the St. Olaf 12-yard line, but could not complete a pass on fourth down, ending its drive with 1:00 left. The Oles were able to kneel down twice to clinch the victory.
• Monroe also scored on a two-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, rushing 14 times for 69 yards to lead the Auggies. Tre Lee (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) rushed 10 times for 37 yards and a first-quarter two-yard touchdown run.
• Quarterback Cade Sheehan (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) completed 22-of-38 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns against one interception. He completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Smith (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) in the third quarter, and a 23-yarder in the third to Braden Tretter (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS).
• Smith caught six passes for 92 yards and Tretter caught six passes for 63 yards in the game. Tyrone Wilson (FY, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) caught three passes for 100 yards, including a 58-yarder that helped set up Augsburg's final touchdown of the day.
• Defensively, Camdin Carlson-Mathies (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) led the Auggies with 12 tackles (two solo), with a tackle for-loss.
• Justin Tverberg (SO, Farmington, Minn./Hastings HS) and Michael Harris III (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) had eight tackles each, with Tre Harmon (FY, South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) and Lionel Gates (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) recording six tackles each.
Jariel Lopez-Barrera (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had two tackles for-loss among his four tackles in the game.

FOR THE FOES
• Theo Doran completed 19-of-29 passing for 253 yards and two touchdowns, with Payton Schott catching seven passes for 101 yards and a fourth-quarter 39-yard touchdown pass.
• Christian Graske rushed 26 times for 116 yards and a touchdown.
• Tate Sauerwein and Ben Hestorff had nine tackles each for the Oles.
