Auggies drop heartbreaker to Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The 18th-ranked Augsburg University volleyball team dropped its third match in a row in heartbreaking fashion on Friday evening, falling to Macalester College 3-2 (25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 20-25, 10-15) in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Tied 11-11 early in the first set, Augsburg won four of the next six points to open up a 15-13 lead. Macalester managed to tie the set up again at 16 each, but Augsburg answered once again with three straight points to regain the lead. The Scots kept it within a point for most of the remaining portion of the set, but Augsburg hung on for a narrow 25-23 set win.
• The Auggies came out much stronger in the second set, quickly jumping out to a commanding 15-4 lead. The Scots fought hard to get back in the set, but Augsburg ultimately kept them at arms-length as it claimed the second set 25-17 to go up 2-0 in the match.
• The third set was as close as they come, containing 16 ties as neither team leading by more than two until the final point in the set. Tied at 22, Macalester earned two-straight kills before an Augsburg attack error on set point gave the Scots the 25-22 set win.
• Set four played out similarly as the two teams went blow-for-blow and stayed within two points of each other for most of its duration. With a narrow 21-20 advantage, the Scots rattled off four-straight points to take the set 25-20 and even the match up at 2-2.
• Tied at 7-7, Macalester won four of the following five points to open up a 12-8 lead. The deficit proved to be too much to overcome for Augsburg as the Scots pushed through to take the set 15-10 and complete the reverse sweep of the Auggies.
Kevin Boysen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Rochester HS) was outstanding in her return to the court, notching a double-double with a team-leading 18 kills and 16 digs in the match. Brianna Van Well (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) was also a strong contributor, tallying 16 kills and six digs.
Angel Vo (SO, Blaine, Minn./Mounds View HS) remained the defensive leader, finishing with a match-high 25 digs and four assists. Torrie Rehder ranked second on the team with 18 digs while Mikayla Coops (Jr, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) was fourth on the team with 14 digs, also racking up 45 assists and 10 kills in the match.
• Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) finished the match with eight kills and nine digs.
• Augsburg hit .192 with 65 kills and 31 errors on 177 attempts while the Scots hit .211 with 60 kills and 22 errors on 180 attempts.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The 3-2 final marked the first time the Auggies have gone to a fifth set this season.
 
FOR THE FOES
• Adisa Preston and Eliza King led the Scots with 14 kills each, with King also contributing 14 digs.

• Augsburg will head to Northfield, Minn. for a matchup against St. Olaf College tomorrow (10/5) at 4 pm.
