MINNEAPOLIS -- Surrendering a goal in the 42nd minute, the Augsburg University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: St. Olaf 1, Augsburg 0
LOCATION:Â Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS:Â Augsburg 6-9-2Â overall (3-5-2Â MIAC), St. Olaf 9-5-1Â overall (7-2-1Â MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The teams traded possession advantage throughout the game, with each team having sustained stretches in the opponents' attacking third. St. Olaf held a 55-to-45-percent possession advantage and outshot Augsburg by a 16-15 margin -- though Augsburg had a 10-8 advantage, with seven shots on-goal, in the second half.
• The Oles took the lead with a goal in the 42nd minute and held on for their fifth straight shutout win.
•
Jayla Ponce (SO, Kuna, Idaho/Kuna HS),
Allison Hookom (FY, Andover, Minn./Anoka HS) and
Samantha Meyer (SO, Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had three shots each for the Auggies.
Megan Hensel (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) andÂ
Jennifer Bobaric (SR, Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had two shots each.
•
Iz Shuster (JR, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) had six saves in goal for the Auggies.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Despite the loss, Augsburg remains alive for the final berth in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs, but only one scenario remains in Saturday's (10/29) regular-season finale -- Augsburg must win at Bethel in its regular-season finale, and there must be a tie in the Gustavus-at-Macalester finale. Should the Scots or Gusties win, they would capture the last playoff spot with 15 conference points, compared to a possible 14 points if the Auggies win their finale.
• The game marked the final game at Edor Nelson Field for three Augsburg seniors -- Bobaric,
Sam Donahugh (SR, Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago HS) and
Molly Conners (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS).
FOR THE FOES
• Maylee Aldentaler scored on a one-timer off a cross from Mae Guetschow at the 41:32 mark for St. Olaf.
• Ole goalkeeper Maddie Black had seven saves.
QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH MIKE NAVARRE
• "Maddening, that's the word that comes to mind. Once again, the chances were there, but the final execution wasn't. I'm proud of the way we played and how hard we pushed to win. I'm particularly proud of Jenn and Sam and how hard they competed in their last home game. We'll see how the league plays out; regardless of what happens, I'm confident we will play hard on Saturday."
