Auggie volleyball earns sweep of Carleton

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University volleyball team got back in the win column on Wednesday night, earning a dominant sweep of Carleton College (25-15, 25-11, 25-11) in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Si Melby Hall.

THE BASICS

RECORDS: No. 25 Augsburg 16-7 overall (5-5 MIAC), Carleton 5-16 overall (1-9 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED 
• After allowing the Knights to get out to a 4-1 lead early in the first, the Auggies took control of the set with nine of the next ten points to take a 10-6 advantage. Carleton kept it relatively close for most of the set, but with Augsburg leading 17-14, the Auggies won eight of the final nine points to seal the 25-15 win.
• Clinging to a 9-7 advantage early in the second set, the Auggies won seven consecutive points to take a commanding 16-7 lead. Augsburg was in control the rest of the way, cruising to a 25-11 set win.
• The Knights took the first two points of set three, but the Auggies responded with another seven-point streak to take 7-2 lead. It was all Augsburg from that point as the Auggies kept their foot on the gas and took the third set 25-11 to complete the sweep.
 • Brianna Van Well (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) was extremely efficient for the Auggie attack, hitting .520 with a match-leading 14 kills. Kevin Boysen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) hit .368 with 10 kills and came within a single dig of a double-double with nine. 
 • Jade Fullerton (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) hit .538 with eight kills, three digs, and a team-high four blocks (one solo). Fullerton leads the MIAC 85 total blocks (1.15 per-set) this season. Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) tallied seven kills and six digs in the match while Mikayla Coops (Jr, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) finished with a match-high 33 assists to go along with seven digs and four kills. 
 • Augsburg was dominant throughout the match, hitting .386 as team with 44 kills and 10 errors on 88 attempts. The Carleton attack struggled for most of the evening, hitting -.057 with 18 kills and 23 errors on 88 attempts.

FOR THE FOES
• Kerrigan Candra led Carleton with five kills and nine digs.

• Augsburg will host St. Scholastica on Saturday (10/29) at 7 pm in its regular season finale.
