Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Auggies blank No. 23-ranked Blugolds 1-0

MINNEAPOLIS – A goal in the 23rd minute by Kebba Janneh (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and some incredible defense by the Augsburg University men's soccer team produced a 1-0 victory over the previously unbeaten and No. 23-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Wisconsin-Eau Claire 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 7-1-3 overall, UW-Eau Claire 13-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg scored its lone goal on its first shot of the game, at the 22:18 mark. Spencer Enright (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) gained the ball 30 yards out on the right wing following a steal by Jonathan Ongeri-Kamara (JR, Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS). Enright fed the ball back to Ongeri-Kamara, who drove to the right side of the 18-yard box and crossed the ball to Janneh. Janneh spun towards the end line and fired a difficult diagonal shot to the upper left corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season.
• The Auggies kept the shutout alive on a wild play 10 minutes later. Off a throw-in from 30 yards out, a Blugold player in the six-yard box headed the ball just over the head of Augsburg goalkeeper Oscar Herrera (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS), but defender Jakob Mohrlok (SO, Stuttgart, Germany/Schoenbuch Gymnasium) was able to kick the ball away on the goal line.
• Herrera, who had four saves in the game for his fifth shutout of the season and 11th of his career, came up with an incredible save of his own in the 55th minute, as he made a diving stop to his left on a penalty-kick attempt by UW-Eau Claire's Nathan Donovan. It was Herrera's third save on a penalty kick attempt in his college career; he has yet to surrender a penalty kick goal.
• UW-Eau Claire outshot Augsburg by a 19-7 margin -- 8-3 in the first half and 11-4 in the second half. But just five Blugold shots were on-goal, while four of Augsburg's seven shots were on-target.
• After UW-Eau Claire held a 54-to-46-percent possession advantage in the first half, Augsburg was able to use a firm defense to keep greater control in the second half, and the teams ended up even in possession time at 50-to-50 percent.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• It's the second time this fall that an Augsburg team has knocked off a nationally-ranked UW-Eau Claire team; the Auggie volleyball team beat the defending NCAA Division III national champion (and No. 5-ranked at the time) Blugolds in a four-set match on Sept. 9 at Augsburg.
• Augsburg, which entered the game as the No. 3-ranked scoring offense nationally in Division III (3.60 goals per-game), has now outscored its opponents by a 37-6 margin, and has six team shutouts.

FOR THE FOES
• UW-Eau Claire entered Tuesday's game as one of just four unbeaten and untied teams remaining in NCAA Division III men's soccer, and its 13 wins were the most of any Division III team nationally.
• Carter Thiesfeld had five shots in the game for the Blugolds, and Cooper Roberts and Donovan had three shots each.
• Spencer Banks had three saves in goal for UW-Eau Claire.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "That was a gritty win. Eau Claire is really difficult to play against -- they've got size, pace, power, ambition and a bit of an aggressiveness to go with it. They've won 13 games because of that and they will win more. That being said, we had a plan and we worked it out effectively.
• "When Kebba grabbed that first chance, I had a feeling it would hold at 1-0. I know we can weather a storm because our group is tight and will do anything for each other. That was evident all night. I am glad I wasn't the referee in this game. There were 42 fouls called, and there were many more out there. It was intense, physical, and highly competitive, and I am grateful to get out of it without any serious injury."
• "I thought Kobby Owu was unplayable tonight. He was so important for us in keeping the ball and breaking lines. Mitchel Munzing was a bright spot in midfield, buzzing around and making a difference while giving our main guys a break. Drew Collins did what he does leading the team from the back and making sure our goal was protected. The two times they got in, we had Oscar to do his part. He saved their PK, and then closed Donovan when he got in real close to make certain we kept the clean sheet."
• "Overall, it wasn't pretty, but it was effective and that game will make us better and prepare us for some other upcoming games. We get a day off to recover and then we head to Winona on Saturday. The last time we were there, we lost in overtime, so we know how dangerous they can be and how important being sharp and prepared is for us."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a game at Saint Mary's University on Saturday (10/8) at 3:30 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
