HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg scored twice in the opening 16 minutes to take an early advantage that it would not relinquish. After a foul in the 18-yard box on an Augsburg corner kick,
Nick Zuchowski (SR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) stepped to the spot and converted his fourth penalty kick in six attempts this season -- and Augsburg's seventh penalty kick goal in nine attempts as a team. The goal was Zuchowski's eighth of the season and 22nd of his Auggie career.
• Augsburg scored its second goal at the 15:33 mark, completing a solid offensive play. Following a give-and-go with
Kobby Owu (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS),
Spencer Enright (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) fired the ball from the center of the 18-yard box to the left edge of the goal, and the save was rebounded byÂ
Kebba Janneh (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) into the net for his eighth goal of the year.
• The Auggies took a commanding lead in the 51st minute, with the threesome of Owu, Jennah and Zuchowski striking again. Zuchowski worked his way open in the 18-yard box and slid a diagonal pass to Jennah, who found Owu sprinting in from the right wing for his third goal of the season.
• Augsburg goalkeeper
Oscar Herrera (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) collected his sixth shutout of the season and 12th of his collegiate career with a three-save effort. The shutout was Augsburg's seventh as a team this season.
• The Auggies outshot the Cardinals by a 29-7 margin and had eight kicks to the Cardinals' four.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg, which entered the game as the
No. 5-ranked scoring offense nationally in Division III (3.36 goals per-game), has now outscored its opponents by a 40-6 margin.
• Augsburg's seven penalty kick goals this season are tied for the most among any Division III team nationally.
• Zuchowski and Janneh are tied for the MIAC's lead in overall goals with eight.
FOR THE FOES
• Rolando Lopez had two shots for Saint Mary's.
• Daniel Sessler had 12 saves in goal in 68 minutes, with Jake Wing recording one save in relief.
QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "It's helpful to score early, clearly. It just puts us on the front foot and forces the opponent to come out a bit more, which gives us the room we want to create more chances. We still weren't great in front of goal, but we did score two well constructed goals in the run of play."
• "Kebba and Z are in a race with each other to catch Elcano and Schneider and their single-season goal mark. For them both to get on the board again was promising, and it was great for Kobby to put one in as well.
• "Oscar and the backs have been pretty good so far this season, and adding a seventh clean sheet to the list is well-deserved."
• "Now we face one of our toughest tests of the season on Tuesday, when an undefeated and seventh-ranked Gustavus comes to Edor Nelson Field. They've been exceptional this year and now their main guys are back in action. It will be an incredible opportunity."
UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Gustavus Adolphus in a huge MIAC game on Tuesday (10/11) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
