Fourth-quarter spark lifts Auggies over Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Augsburg University women's basketball team opened up play at the David Wells Classic in Claremont, California on Friday evening, earning a 65-61 comeback win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first quarter was tight-knit throughout with neither team leading by more than five at any point. At the first quarter break, the Athenas held a 17-16 lead. The second quarter was more of the same as CMS took a two-point lead to the locker room at halftime.
• The Athena lead continued to grow in the third as the Auggies trailed by six heading into the final frame. The Auggies dominated the fourth quarter, holding the Athenas to just three made-field goals and outscoring them 16-6 to earn the four-point, come-from-behind win.
Kalena Myers (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) finished as the leading scorer for the Auggies, scoring 19 on an efficient eight-of-13 from the floor and adding six rebounds, five steals, and three assists.
• Jaley Coplin (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) was just behind her with 18 points and seven rebounds.  Anja Smith (JR, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) was the only other Auggie in double figures with 11 points, five steals, and four rebounds. Samaiya Buchanan (Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS) added seven points off the bench.
• Turnovers were a key figure in the game with the Athenas turning it over 19 times and the Auggies cashing them in for 21 points compared to just four points off 10 turnovers for CMS.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

• The game marked the third meeting all-time between the two schools with Augsburg getting its first-ever win in the series.

FOR THE FOES
• Renee Chong led the Athenas with 13 points coming off the bench.

• The Auggies will wrap up play at the David Wells Classic with a game against Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 6:30 pm (Central Time).
