Auggies cap off California trip with 66-53 win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Augsburg University women's basketball team completed its trip to the David Wells Classic in Southern California on Saturday evening, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 66-53 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies got off to a slow start, quickly finding themselves in a 14-4 hole with four minutes to play in the first quarter. Despite the early deficit, they closed the quarter on an 11-4 run to make it a four-point game at the first quarter break. Augsburg continued the pressure in the second quarter, tying the game at 22 and keeping pace the rest of the way to head into the locker room all knotted up at 30.
• Less than three minutes into the third quarter, the Auggies took just their second lead of the game at 37-36 and never looked back as they would hold the advantage for the remainder of the contest. They would go on to close the third with a seven-point lead before expanding the lead to a game-high 13 points as the final buzzer sounded.
Anja Smith (JR, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) led the Auggies with a season-high 23 points and grabbed five rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Kalena Myers (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had another strong night, scoring 15 on six-of-11 shooting from the floor with three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
 • Samaiya Buchanan (Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS) was the only other Auggie in double figures with 14 points on a perfect five-of-five shooting, also tallying six rebounds. Jaley Coplin (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) finished with a team-high eight rebounds and added five points
• The Auggies knocked down 25 of their 65 attempts from the field (38.5%) while the Sagehens hit just 19 of 66 attempts (28.8%). Augsburg also dominated in the painted area, outscoring Pomona-Pitzer 30-12 in the category.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game marked the second meeting all-time between the two teams with Augsburg now holding a perfect 2-0 record in the series.

FOR THE FOES
• Kaitlyn Leung notched the game's only double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Sagehens.
