Dominant scoring duo pushes Auggies past Knights

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Augsburg University women's basketball team returned to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and extended is win streak to three games on Wednesday night with a 69-56 win over Carleton College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 11-11 early in the first quarter, the Auggies rattled off a 10-0 run with five points each from Anja Smith (JR, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) and Jaley Coplin (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) to take a 21-11 lead. The Knights closed out the quarter on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to four at the first quarter break.
• Carleton carried its scoring surge into the opening minutes of the second quarter as they scored eight unanswered to regain the lead at 27-23. The advantage was short-lived for Carleton, however, with Augsburg finishing the first half on a 20-9 run to take 43-36 advantage to halftime.
• Augsburg was utterly dominant in the third quarter, outscoring Carleton by a margin of 16-5 to extend its lead to 18 at the start of the fourth. The Auggie lead grew as high as 19 and never shrunk below 13 in the fourth quarter as they cruised to a 69-56 win.
• Smith and Coplin were a dynamic duo all night with Smith logging a 26-point, 12-rebound double-double on 12-21 shooting from the floor and Coplin matching her career-high with 24 points on 8-13 shooting, also adding seven rebounds.
 • Kalena Myers (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) finished with six points and four assists while Alani Pettis (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) set a new career-best with five points.
• Augsburg narrowly outshot Carleton, hitting on 26 of 62 shots from the field (41.9%) compared to the Knights' 24-59 (40.7%) performance. The Auggie reserves were much stronger than their opponents as Augsburg outscored Carleton in bench points by a margin of 13-0. Augsburg also held a narrow 13-9 advantage in fast-break points.

FOR THE FOES
• The Knights scoring attack was extremely top-heavy with just four players recording points. Jasmine Choi led the way with 20 points while Emma Henry and Amelia Solt added 16 and 12, respectively. Aiana Whitfield rounded out the scoresheet with eight points for Carleton.

• The Auggies will wrap up their stretch of six-straight road games with a trip to St. Joseph for a MIAC game against Saint Benedict on Saturday (12/3) at 3 pm.
