MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg University men's basketball guard
Joe Palmer (JR, Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) was named to the Academic All-District 6 Men's Basketball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Thursday.
A history and secondary education major with a 3.71 grade-point average, Palmer earned a spot on the six-member elite academic squad, which honors top student-athletes from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Palmer has established himself as one of the top swingmen in the
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, leading the league in both scoring (21.5 points per-game) and rebounding (8.9 rebounds per-game) in the regular season. In 22 games this season, Palmer has scored 472 points, with 195 rebounds, 46 assists, 29 steals and six blocked shots. Palmer has connected on a team-high 50 three-pointers (fifth among MIAC players), hitting 52.1 percent of his field goals (eighth in the MIAC) and 35.7 percent of his three-point shots. His 72 free throws are second-most in the MIAC, with his 73.7-percent free-throw percentage fourth-best.
Palmer has scored in double-figures in all but one of his games this season, with 10 point-rebound double-doubles. He has scored 20-plus points in 13 games, with 30-plus-point efforts in four games. In his 55-game collegiate career (37 starts), Palmer now has 824 career points (15.0 per-game), 345 rebounds (6.3 per-game), 96 assists, 49 steals and 15 blocked shots. He has 97 career three-pointers.
Augsburg finished the regular season with a 16-6 overall record and 13-4 conference mark, and will host either Bethel or Concordia-Moorhead as the No. 2 seed in the MIAC postseason playoffs on Tuesday (2/22) at 7:45 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District team is part of the
CoSIDA Academic All-America program. Top student-athletes from NCAA Division III programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are eligible for inclusion on the District 6 team, one of eight Division III districts nationwide. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.30 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams. First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members and CoSIDA members in each division.
The Division III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the Division III Academic All-America teams program.
