Masello named MIAC Player of Year, Riverso Coach of Year

2021-22 MIAC Women's Basketball Awards

MINNEAPOLIS – Augsburg University's Jen Masello (SR, Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) was named the 2021-22 MIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year and head coach Ted Riverso was named the MIAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year while seven Auggies in total earned various MIAC honors, it was announced on Tuesday.

In addition to being named Player of the Year, Masello was also named to the All-MIAC Team and the MIAC All-Defensive Team. Anja Smith (SO, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) was named the MIAC Women's Basketball Sixth Player of the Year and also earned an All-MIAC nod. Selena Lor (SR, Winona, Minn./Winona HS) was also named to the All-MIAC Team for Augsburg.

Jaley Coplin (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) and Kalena Myers (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) were each named All-MIAC Honorable Mentions while Chloe Kintop (JR, Foxboro, Wis./Superior HS) earned a spot on the MIAC All-Sportsmanship Team. It was the first appearance for all six players on each respective list.

Ted RiversoRiverso was named the conference's Coach of the Year for the ninth time in his career, having previously earned the award seven times as the head coach at St. Thomas in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1996,1997, and 1998 and as Augsburg's head coach in 2019.

In his seventh season as the head coach of the Auggies, Riverso guided Augsburg to its first-ever MIAC Regular Season Championship with an overall record of 21-6 and a stellar mark of 19-2 in conference play. The Auggies made it to the MIAC Playoff Championship game, finishing as the runner-up behind Gustavus.

Jen MaselloWith her designation as the conference Player of the Year, Masello becomes the first Auggie in school history to earn the award. She was also named All-MIAC and earned a spot on the MIAC All-Defensive Team.

Masello had a dominant year for the Auggies, starting all 27 games and ranking eighth in the MIAC with 14.2 points per-game and second in the MIAC with 8.8 rebounds per-game while sitting seventh with a field goal percentage of 48.3%. She finished in double-figures 23 times this season, including five 20-plus point performances and 10 double-doubles. Masello was named the MIAC Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week twice during the season, earning the award in consecutive weeks in November.

In addition to her prowess on offense, Masello was also the leader for the Auggies on defense, ranking first in the MIAC with 49 blocks (1.8 per-game) and fourth with 60 steals (2.2 per-game).

For her career, Masello has played in 82 games and made 33 starts, tallying 615 points, 457 rebounds, 111 assists, 106 steals, and 94 blocks.

Anja SmithSmith was named the MIAC Sixth Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-MIAC team, both career firsts. The sophomore had a breakout year, ranking second in the conference with 17.1 points per-game, fifth with a field goal percentage of 50.5%, and seventh with 6.5 rebounds per game.

The sophomore set a new single-game school record with 39 points against Saint Benedict on 2/12. She played in 22 games for the Auggies, reaching double figures in 21 of them and scoring 20-plus seven times. She also tallied 24 steals, six assists, and four blocks on the year. Smith was named MIAC Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week two times throughout the season.

Selena LorLor also earned her first All-MIAC nod after making 26 starts for the Auggies this season and averaging 9.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per-game. In her 27 appearances this year, she reached double figures 12 times. The senior also recorded 76 assists, 35 steals, and four blocks on the year.

In her four-year career at Augsburg, Lor has played in a total of 87 games and made 31 starts. She has scored 472 points and racked up 172 rebounds, 152 assists, 71 steals, and nine blocks.

Jaley CoplinPlaying in 26 games and making 25 starts, Coplin was named an All-MIAC Honorable Mention for the first time as a junior. She averaged 10.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per-game and knocked down 61 of her 161 attempts from beyond the arc to rank fourth in the conference in three-point percentage (37.9%).

In her career thus far, Coplin has played in 54 games and made 31 starts for Augsburg. She has scored a total of 372 points and tallied 156 rebounds, 48 assists, and 45 steals.

Kalena MyersMyers also earned her first All-MIAC Honorable Mention nod after playing in all 27 games and making 26 starts as a sophomore. She averaged 9.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per-game and added 65 assists and 60 steals.

In her two years with the Auggies, Myers has played in 33 games and scored a total of 323 points with 81 rebounds, 79 assists, and 74 steals.

Chloe KintopKintop was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team as a part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Kintop has played in 28 games for the Auggies in her career so far, making two starts. She has scored a total of 38 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, 10 assists, and six steals.
