TUCSON, Ariz. – The Augsburg University baseball team dropped its first game of the season on Saturday evening, falling to Wesleyan University 9-8 in 13 innings in the Auggies' first of nine games in Tucson, Arizona this week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies started the scoring in the top of the fourth when
Jack Baumgart (JR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) plated both
Michael Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) and
Clint Mattson (JR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) and Baumgart and
Steven Salz (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored on a Wesleyan error.
• After Wesleyan responded with three runs of their own, Weiss batted in
Connor Stoik (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3 Auggies.
• The Wesleyan offense found a groove in the fifth inning, scoring five runs to take their first lead of the game. The Auggies tied it up at 8-8 in the eighth inning, with
Ty Gage (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) and
Carson Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) scoring on a
Kaden Gage (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) single and
JT Williams (SO, Colorado Springs, Colo./Redford HS) scoring on a bases-loaded walk of Weiss.
• After four scoreless innings, the Cardinals scored on an Augsburg throwing error in the bottom of the 13th inning for the walk-off win.

Austin Jerylo (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) got the start for Augsburg, pitching 4.1 innings and striking out two with nine hits and eight runs allowed.
Myer Schmitz (FY, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) and
Cam Fischer (SO, Becker, Minn./Becker HS) pitched in relief, allowing just one hit each and combining to strike out four in 1.2 and 2.0 innings of work, respectively.

Matt Moe (SR, St. Cloud, Minn./Becker HS) finished off the game and took the loss for Augsburg, striking out six and allowing just two hits in 4.1 innings of work.
• Weiss, Baumgart, and
Kaden Gage each recorded two RBIs for the Auggies.
FOR THE FOES
• Wes Fritch went three-for-six at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
• Ian Appleby picked up his first win of the season, tossing four scoreless innings and striking out five Augsburg batters.
