Auggies swept by Pipers in doubleheader

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After enduring two weather delays and a weather-related suspension that pushed part of game two to Sunday afternoon, the Augsburg University baseball team wrapped up play in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Hamline University with a 5-4 loss in game one and a 5-0 loss in game two. 

THE BASICS

RECORD: Augsburg 11-18 overall (3-9 MIAC), Hamline 9-19 overall (3-9 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
• The Pipers were the first to light up the scoreboard with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
• Augsburg tied things back up at 2-2 in the top of the third with both Carson Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and Kaden Gage (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) scoring on a Piper fielding error.
• Hamline regained the advantage shortly after with an RBI double to put the Pipers up 3-2 in the fourth.
• The Auggies refused to go down easy, tying it up at three each with an RBI single from Michael Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) that scored Gage in the fifth inning. One inning later, Austin Jerylo (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) put the Auggies back on top with a single that brought Jack Baumgart (SR, Willmar, Minn./Willmar HS) around to score.
• The Pipers added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-4 before walking it off with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that sealed the 5-4 win.
Jake Skogrand (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) got the start for Augsburg, striking out four and surrendering eight hits and three earned runs in 5.0 innings on the mound. Connor Stoik (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) took the loss, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out one batter in 1.2 innings of work.
• The Auggies had trouble sustaining success on offense throughout the game with no players recording more than one hit. Weiss led the offense, going one-for-four with three runs batted in and a stolen base.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (SUSPENDED ON 4/23, FINISHED ON 4/24)
• With game two being suspended in the top of the seventh inning due to severe weather, the Pipers held a 3-0 lead over the Auggies at the end of play on Saturday thanks to an RBI single in the fourth and an RBI double and a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.
• Hamline added two more runs when play resumed on Sunday afternoon while continuing to shutout the Auggie offense. 
Brandon Lockhart (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) and Steven Salz (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) both went two-for-four with Lockhart getting one extra-base hit in the form of a 
Luke Johnson (JR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) started the game for Augsburg, going 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and five hits and three runs surrendered.
• Owen Bernards (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two while giving up two walks and two hits. Jerylo appeared briefly in relief, going 0.2 innings with one walk.  
Dylan Irving (SR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) finished the game off, striking out two while giving up four hits and two runs in 2.0 innings. 

UP NEXT
• The Auggies are scheduled to take on the College of St. Scholastica in a home doubleheader at Parade Stadium on Friday (4/29) starting at 2:30 p.m.
