Dominant pitching fuels Auggie sweep of Knights

MINNEAPOLIS – Powered by excellent pitching performances all afternoon, the Augsburg University baseball team completed its 2022 home schedule with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Carleton College at Parade Stadium on Senior Day.

THE BASICS
SCORES: Augsburg 1, Carleton 0; Augsburg 5, Carleton 0
LOCATION: Parade Stadium, Minneapolis Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 14-21 overall (6-12 MIAC), Carleton 9-20 overall (6-10 MIAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
•  Jake Skogrand (FY, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) was phenomenal on the mound in game one, pitching a complete-game shutout with a career-high six strikeouts and just three hits allowed in his 7.0 innings, also a new career high.
Connor Stoik (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) batted in the lone run of the ball game in the bottom of the fourth, bringing Michael Weiss (JR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) around to score with a single through the left side.
• Stoik and Steven Salz (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) each finished the game one-for-two while Weiss finished one-for-three.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
• Pitching was the key to victory once again in game two with starter Austin Jerylo (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) giving the Auggies their second consecutive seven scoreless-inning performance of the day. Jerylo's line was nearly identical to Skogrand's in game one, striking out six Knights while allowing just three hits on the day. Myer Schmitz (FY, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) closed the game for Augsburg, allowing two hits in 2.0 innings on the mound.
• The Auggies first got on the board in the second inning when Skogrand came around to score on a single by Tim Lavin (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) after reaching base on a Carleton error. Kaden Gage (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) put the Auggies up 2-0 later that inning with a single to left field that scored Lavin.
Ty Gage (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) continued the scoring in the fourth, plating Stoik with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Carson Tomony (JR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) had the lone extra base hit in the game for Augsburg in the bottom of the seventh, doubling to left field and scoring Kaden Gage in the process.
• Augsburg would tack on another run in the eighth when Ty Gage was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Stoik.
• Stoik finished the game three-for-four with two runs scored while Brandon Lockhart (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) was two-for-four and Ty Gage was one-for-two with two RBIs. Tomony, Weiss, Salz, Lavin, and Kaden Gage each had one hit in the game.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Blanking the Knights in both games, the Auggies recorded their first doubleheader shutout in MIAC play since the 1992 season when they shutout both Macalester 12-0 and 10-0 on May 9 and Carleton 1-0 and 5-0 on April 14.
• With a stolen base in the bottom of the first, Weiss set a new single-season school record with 24 stolen bases in 28 attempts so far this season.

FOR THE FOES
• Entering the day as the conference leader in earned run average, Kiefer Lord continued his dominant season on the mound in game one with 12 strikeouts and just three hits and one run allowed in 6.0 innings.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will take on the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in a single nonconference game on Thursday (5/5) at 5 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
