Augsburg opens with impressive win over Yellowjackets

MINNEAPOLIS -- Nick Zuchowski (SR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored two goals on free kicks, and Camel Htoo (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Washington HS) scored his first collegiate goal, as the Augsburg University men's soccer team rallied for a 3-1 nonconference win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE:
Augsburg 3, Wisconsin-Superior 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 1-0-0 overall, UW-Superior 0-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg surrendered a goal just 2:57 into play, but then scored twice in a five-minute span midway through the second half to take a lead it would not relinquish over UW-Superior, winners of four straight Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season titles.
• After Kobby Owu (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./Como Park HS) was fouled at the top of the 18-yard box in the 23rd minute, Zuchowski tied the game for the Auggies with a free kick to the top right corner of the net.
• Htoo scored his first collegiate goal in the 28th minute, driving on the left wing and making a move past a defender in the penalty box before firing a rising, diagonal right-footed shot to the upper right.
• The game was an evenly matched contest between two solid, aggressive teams, as UW-Superior held a 16-14 advantage in shots, while the Auggies held a 51-to-49-percent possession advantage.
• After Mizael Harris (FY, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) was fouled at the top of the box, Zuchowski again put the ball in the net on a free kick, with a rising shot to the top left corner of the net with 1:54 left to play, sealing the win for the hosts.
• Oscar Herrera (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had five saves in goal for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Blake Perry scored the lone goal of the game for UW-Superior at the 2:57 mark, finishing with a goal from inside the 18-yard box following a long drive by Mackie Ringrose off a turnover.
• Patrick Sessions had three saves in goal for the Yellowjackets,

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "When the group isn't as sharp as it can be for whatever reason, then you need special players to step up and carry you on. We had two of those tonight in Oscar Herrera and Nick Zuchowski. Oscar made four goal stopping saves -- I mean sure goals. He was insanely good. I am in awe of what he just did, and then when I thought my jaw couldn't drop any lower, Z steps up and hits a second dead ball into the top corner. Just incredible goals from him and a very solid performance. We weren't sure he would be able to return, as he had to exit late in the first half. He suffered more fouls alone tonight than the rest of our team combined, but we are all grateful he found a way to fight through the pain and get back on the field."
• "Blake Perry is an incredible talent. He created some wow moments tonight -- big time moments. I was wondering how many of our players wanted his jersey. He is special."
• "In the first 20 minutes of the game, we were unsettled and our shape was out of whack. We weren't sure whether we should climb up or sit back, and we ended up in between, especially in transition. As the game wore on, we sorted that out and at least made it predictable, but that didn't take away the threat of them getting in behind us. Momentum turned on Z's first goal, and then Camel comes in and just hammers one in a few minutes after stepping on the field for his debut to give us the lead."
• "One of the great characteristics of championship caliber teams is that they don't get discouraged when things are not going the way they hoped. We came back from 0-1 down, put together a makeshift midfield, and used a lot of players in the front three to get three points against a good UW-Superior team. I am proud of our effort and commitment to each other and our program."
