AUSTIN, Texas -- The Augsburg University volleyball team opened its season on Thursday evening with a dominant 3-1 win over Concordia Texas as part of the Southwestern University Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
• Things were tightly contested in the early stages with Augsburg holding a narrow 19-17 advantage late in the first set. From there, the Auggies found their rhythym and never looked back as they rattled off six consecutive points to take the first set 25-17.
• Roles reversed in the second set with the Tornados grabbing five of the last seven points to break the 20-20 tie and take the second set 25-22.
• The Auggies came out hot in the third set, jumping out to a commanding 6-0 lead. Concordia took three consecutive points to cut the early deficit in half, but Augsburg continued to roll and claimed set three 25-13.
 • The fourth set began with a 3-3 tie before Augsburg found its footing with a seven-point streak that made it 10-3. Thanks in large part to later point streaks of five and four, Augsburg cruised to a 25-12 win in the fourth set to seal the 3-1 season-opening win.
• The Auggies racked up 46 kills in the match and committed 18 errors for a .219 hitting percentage. Concordia tallied 32 kills and committed a whopping 33 errors for a -.007 hitting percentage. Augsburg also had the advantage in service aces with seven to Concordia's four.

Kevin Boysen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) was the offensive leader for Augsburg, recording a match-high 13 kills to go along with six digs and five block assists.

Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) and
Brianna Van Well (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) had 10 kills each with Gjerde adding 12 digs and Van Well adding six.

Angel Vo (SO, Blaine, Minn./Mounds View HS) led the way on defense with 16 digs in the match while
Torrie Rehder (SO, Goodhue, Minn./ Goodhue HS) was second on the team with 14 digs.
FOR THE FOES
• The Tornados were led by Kinsy Haschke with nine kills and eight digs in the match.
• Sarah Ghormley led the Concordia defense with 11 digs while Kaitlyn Ruiz and Alyssa Legette each had 10 digs.

• The Auggies will play two more matches on Friday as a part of the Southwestern Invitational, taking on the University of Texas-Dallas at 2:15 p.m. and Southwestern University at 6:45 p.m. in Georgetown, Texas.
