Volleyball tops Comets, falls to Pirates on Friday

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Continuing competition on the second day of the Southwestern Invitational, the Augsburg University Volleyball team topped the University of Texas-Dallas 3-1 and fell to 18th-ranked Southwestern University 0-3 on Friday afternoon.

THE BASICS

AUGSBURG 3, UT-DALLAS 1 
• After starting the first set with a 5-5 tie, the Comets grabbed four consecutive points to take a 9-5 lead that they would never relinquish. The Auggies never managed to get within two of UT-Dallas as they dropped set one to the Comets 18-25.  
• Augsburg was in control for most of the second set, evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 win. The third set was more of the same as the Auggies jumped out to an early 8-3 lead en route to a 25-17 victory.
• Leading by as many as eight, Augsburg once again held the advantage for the duration of the fourth set as they claimed the 25-19 win to take the match 3-1.
• For the second time in as many matches, Kevin Boysen (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) led the Auggies with 11 kills, also contributing 13 digs and three block assists.
• Balance was the name of the game for the Augsburg offense as Brianna Van Well (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS), Kayla Gjerde (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS), and Mikayla Coops (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS) each finished with nine kills while Jade Fullerton (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) tallied eight. Coops was also strong on defense with a team-high 16 digs.
• Augsburg tallied 47 kills and committed 21 errors on 140 total attempts for a .186 hitting percentage while the Comets finished with 41 kills and 25 errors on 139 attempts for a .115 hitting percentage.
• The Auggies doubled up on UT-Dallas in service aces with 10 compared to the Comets' five.

#18 SOUTHWESTERN 3, AUGSBURG 0
• The Pirates jumped all over the Auggies early in the first set, taking a commanding 6-0 lead. Augsburg managed to cut the deficit to four on two occasions, but it proved to be too little, too late as Southwestern claimed the 25-16 win in set one.
• The Auggies started stronger in the second set as they went up 3-0, but Southwestern answered with four straight to take a 4-3 lead. Holding a narrow 11-10 advantage, the Pirates grabbed six consecutive to take a 17-10 lead that proved to be the difference in their 25-18 second-set victory.
• Augsburg held a 14-13 lead midway through the third set, but could not close as the Pirates erased the deficit and cruised to a 25-19 win to cement the sweep.
• Gjerde led the team in both kills (nine) and digs (15) while Van Well and Fullerton tallied five kills each. Angel Vo (SO, Blaine, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 13 digs.
• The Auggies had 30 kills and committed 25 errors with 116 total attempts for a .043 hitting percentage while the Pirates hit .189 with 42 kills and 19 errors on 122 total attempts.

FOR THE FOES
• Catherine Croft led the Comets with 15 kills while Abby Jones had a match-high 24 digs.
• Christina Kuras was the only Pirate with double-digit kills (15).

UP NEXT

• The Auggies will wrap up play in the Southwestern Invitational with a match against George Fox University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
