
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg University's
Mohammed Bati (FY, Dodola, Ethiopia/GAP School) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, it was announced on Tuesday by the conference office.
Bati smashed a 13-year Augsburg University school record in the 8,000-meter distance for men's cross country by 33 seconds, winning his second straight event to open his collegiate career, at the Hamline University MIAC Preview meet on Friday evening.
In doing so, Bati became the first Auggie male cross country runner to ever break the 25-minute barrier in the 8,000-meter distance, setting a new school mark with a 24:32.34 time -- a 15-second advantage over the second-place finisher in the 74-runner field. He broke the old Augsburg school record of 25:05.6, set by Brent Haglund in 2009.
Bati and the Auggies are set to return to action on Saturday (9/17) at the St. Olaf College Invitational in Northfield, Minn. where the women will race at 10 a.m. and the men will follow at 11 a.m.
