Auggies set milestone in 4-0 win over Knights

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring its most goals against Carleton College in a single game in program history, the Augsburg University men's soccer team played one of its most complete games of the season in a 4-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE:
 Augsburg 4, Carleton 0
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-1-2 overall (2-1-1 MIAC), Carleton 3-4-2 overall (1-2-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of play to jump ahead, then added two goals in the final 15 minutes to secure the victory. Augsburg outshot Carleton by an 18 to 12 margin, and controlled the flow of play throughout the game. Augsburg held a 60-to-40-percent advantage in possession, and had six corner kicks to Carleton's two.
• Nick Zuchowski (SR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) claimed his third multi-goal game of the season and fourth of his career, scoring a goal in the eighth minute and a penalty kick goal in the 77th minute -- his third in five attempts this season.
• Zuchowski's first goal came following a left-wing drive by Mizael Harris (FY, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS). Harris' cross to the middle of the six-yard box was deflected by Kobby Owu (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./Como Park HS), and the ball found Zuchowski near the right post for an open goal. Zuchowski's second goal came in the 77th minute, following a handball in the 18-yard box.
• Just 1:40 after Zuchowski's opening goal, the Auggies struck again, as Kebba Janneh (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored his sixth goal of the year. Spencer Enright (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) worked the ball up the middle on a long run and fed a sprinting Jonathan Ongeri-Kamara (JR, Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) from the right side. Ongeri-Kamara deftly passed the ball back to an open Janneh, and he put the ball past the charging Carleton goalkeper into an open net.
• Augsburg's final goal came from Camel Htoo (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Washington HS), who gained the ball on a break from Jeffrey Richter (FY, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS), and slammed a shot home from 15 yards out on the left side.
• Twenty-four Auggies saw action in the game, with 15 players on the field for 30 minutes or more each. Eleven different Auggies had shots in the game.
• Oscar Herrera (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had three saves to claim his fourth shutout of the season and 10th of his career.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The 4-0 win marks the most goals that Augsburg has ever scored in a game against Carleton, in a series that dates to the 1977 season. Augsburg's previous high for goals in a game against the Knights was three, in a 3-2 road win on Oct. 1, 1981.
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 35-5 margin this season, and has had five shutouts as a team.

FOR THE FOES
• Jonathan Vonderlage had three shots, including two on-goal, for Carleton.
• Alexei Thomas had four saves in goal.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We've never put four past Carleton, so this feels a bit eerie. They are always a solid team, and our games have been tremendous year after year. But tonight, we came out in the first 25 minutes and looked like the team we knew we could be. We were moving the ball in all the right pockets at the right times. We got deep and scored two outstanding goals from the endline. It was really fun to be a part of. As the game wore on, they grew into it and we bent a little bit. We did not come close to breaking, though. We never felt threatened by their attack, and always knew we would protect the goal."
• "At halftime, we just needed to revisit what made us so good in the first part of the game, and then we came out and reclaimed that momentum and quality. Z was back to being Z, scoring in the run of play and again from the spot after missing his last two. He showed some serious resilience getting through that."
• "Mizael was a star tonight -- he was so dangerous and creative, and so fun to watch. Camel got himself back on the board and that put a smile on his face, and Tomas Piza finally got some minutes again to start to feel comfortable after his injury."
• "Overall, a really strong team performance, but we have to keep our heads as we host Saint John's on Saturday. They are regionally ranked and have been on a tear, so this will pose to be a big challenge for us."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg hosts Saint John's on Saturday (10/1) at 3:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
