Holland has Hockey Day hat trick, but Auggies fall in OT

WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP, Minn. -- Augsburg University's Gavin Holland (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) claimed his first collegiate hat trick with a three-goal effort, but Saint John's University tied the game with an extra-attacker goal with 1:03 left, then scored the game-winning goal 2:16 into overtime in a 5-4, Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey win for the Johnnies as part of the Hockey Day Minnesota weekend on Friday night at Polar Lakes Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Holland claimed his first collegiate hat trick for the Auggies with a goal in each period. He scored from Nick Woodward (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque HS) and Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) at the 11:09 mark of the first period, scored a power-play goal from Woodward and Austin Dollimer (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) at the 12:44 mark of the second period, and capped his hat trick with a goal from Jake Osiecki (JR, Verona, Wis./Verona HS) and Dylan Schneider (SO, Rochester, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) 4:19 into the third period, giving the Auggies a 3-2 advantage.
• The Johnnies tied the game at the 12:32 mark of the third period, but Erik Palmqvist (SR, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet) with 4:21 left in regulation, walking the puck into the zone and firing a hard-angle shot from the left goal line. 
• Saint John's tied the game with an extra-attacker goal from Nick Michel with 1:03 left in regulation, then 2:16 into the 3-on-3 overtime session, Jackson Sabo stole the puck at center ice and scored on a breakaway to give the Johnnies the victory.
• Augsburg outshot Saint John's by a 33-22 margin -- a 23-9 margin in the second and third periods. The Auggies held a 4-2 shot advantage in overtime. Holland had seven shots on-goal to lead the Auggies.
Jack Robbel (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) had 17 saves in goal for Augsburg.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The game was the first MIAC conference contest to be held as part of Hockey Day Minnesota since the event was established by the Minnesota Wild and Bally Sports North in 2007. It's the second NCAA Division III game to be contested in the event's history; St. Thomas tied Wisconsin-Stout 1-1 at Xcel Energy Center as part of the 2017 event.

FOR THE FOES
• Auggie Moore scored the first two goals of the game for the Johnnies, and Jack Johnson had a goal and two assists.
• Bailey Huber had 29 saves in goal for Saint John's.

• The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/28) at 7 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
