Janneh sets single-season goal record

MINNEAPOLIS – Claiming his sixth multi-goal game of the season, Kebba Janneh (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) set a new Augsburg University men's soccer single-season goal-scoring record, as the Auggies ended the regular season with a 2-2 tie with Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Macalester 2
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 8-3-6 overall (4-1-5 MIAC), Macalester 10-2-5 overall (5-2-3 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Scoring goals in the 12th and 65th minutes, Janneh claimed his 14th and 15th goals of the season, Janneh broke the single-season school record for goals. Janneh tied the old record of 14 last season, joining Mark Schneider (1971 and 1972) and Mike Elcano (2004). Janneh's 35 points this season (15 goals, 5 assists) are now second-most in a single-season in school history, behind the 39 (13 goals, 13 assists) set by Darcy Debing in 1976.
• Janneh was the benefactor of a pair of nicely generated scoring plays, scoring both times off of entry passes to the middle of the 18-yard box. His first goal came following a deep feed from defender Drew Collins (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) to Jonathan Ongeri-Kamara (SR, Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) up the right wing. Ongeri-Kamara centered the ball to Janneh for his shot to the left corner of the net.
• Janneh's game-tying goal came with 25 minutes left in the contest. Owen Salzwedel (SO, St. Anthony Village, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) drove the ball to the right edge of the 18-yard box, then fired a pass across the box to Ceazar Daniell (SO, Portland, Ore./Cleveland HS), who centered the ball to Janneh for his record-setting goal.
• Augsburg was outshot by a 22-10 margin, but just seven Scots' shots were on-frame. Goalkeeper Oscar Herrera (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had five saves for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg is the No. 5 seed in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs, and will face No. 4-seed Macalester on Monday (9/30) at 2 p.m. at Macalester.
• In 51 career games, Janneh now has 81 career points (35 goals, 11 assists), now in a tie for second place in school history in career goals and in third place in career points. Debing (1973-76) holds the school records for both goals (37) and points (119), with Elcano second in both categories (35 goals, 86 points).

FOR THE FOES
• Elijah Edelman scored from Hans Haenicke in the 38th minute for Macalester, scoring on a rising shot from the top of the 18-yard box to the upper right corner. Chris Frantz scored an unassisted goal on a scramble in front in the 57th minute.
• Sam Price had two saves in goal for Macalester.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "We really enjoy playing Macalester. They are a great team that works relentlessly. We were under pressure from them all over the field, and I was pleased with how we handled it overall. In all likelihood, we will play them again on Monday at their place in the MIAC quarterfinals, but that won't be determined until tomorrow's slate of games is complete."
• "Kebba finally got it done and we are all so proud and happy for him. He's been tremendous, putting in 29 goals in the last two seasons, and finally breaking the long standing record is a tribute to his determination to grow as a player."
• "Jono was excellent tonight and Zach Sherian was outstanding as our No. 6. He is only going to keep getting better with these high intensity, high stakes games under his belt."
• "We lost control of the game a little bit to start the second half and that's when their goal came, but full credit to our guys for grabbing it back and putting the game back in our control. When Mizael slid into the middle, he opened up so much for us. He is a handful for anyone to deal with. Certainly they had some moments to counter, but we dealt with them well. And we didn't concede a set piece -- that was important for us."
