Auggies fall to Cardinals 2-1

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University women's hockey team hosted Saint Mary's University in the final matchup of the season between the teams on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals 2-1 at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Cardinals opened the scoring with an even strength goal at 14:51 in the first period, later extending the lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at 4:43 in the second period.
Kennedy Stein (SR, Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest HS) got the Auggies on the board for the second consecutive game, sending a loose puck to the back of the net on a backhand shot at 8:37 in the second period. Despite a 13-shot effort by the Auggies in the third period, the 2-1 score held for the remainder of the game as the Cardinals hung on to complete the weekend sweep.
• The Auggies were far more aggressive than the Cardinals in the offensive zone, managing 38 shots on goal to the Cardinals 21. Augsburg went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Cardinals were 1-for-5.
Emily Cronkhite (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) led the team with nine shots on goal while Ella Olson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Nora Stepan (SO, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) added six each.
Chloe Stockinger (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 19 saves in goal for the Auggies.

FOR THE FOES
• Reese Heitzman scored her third goal of the weekend while Celia Midtbo provided the eventual game winner.
• Celeste Rimstad made 37 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

UP NEXT

• Augsburg will now take a week off, returning to action when it hosts St. Olaf College in MIAC action on Friday, December 1 at 7 pm.
