Auggies earn wire-to-wire win over Saints

DULUTH, Minn. – The Augsburg University women's basketball team completed the season-sweep of the College of Saint Scholastica on Wednesday evening, topping the Saints 56-44 on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg made the first bucket of the game and led wire-to-wire in the first quarter, heading to the first break with a 14-8 advantage. The lead continued to grow for Augsburg, peaking at 10 points with the Auggies leading 23-13 with 3:17 to play in the quarter. That score would hold until halftime as both teams went scoreless over the final three minutes of the half.
• Augsburg extended is lead to 13 points early in the third, but the Saints managed to cut the deficit to seven at the final quarter break. The Auggies got a bit of a scare when St. Scholastica pulled within two at 37-35 with just over eight minutes to play, but Augsburg would finish the game on a 19-9 run to complete the wire-to-wire victory.
Jaley Coplin (SR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 21 points on 8-14 shooting and pulling down nine boards along with a game-high three steals. Kalena Myers (JR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) also finished in double figures with 10 points and three rebounds.
Samaiya Buchanan (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS) and Anja Smith (JR, Kewaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) led the Auggie effort off the bench with six points each.
• The Augsburg offense knocked down 20 of its 49 attempts (40.8%) on the evening while the defense held the Saints to just 16-56 (28.6%).

FOR THE FOES
• Lexi Imdieke finished as the offensive leader for St. Scholastica with nine points in the game.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will head to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf College at 3 pm on Saturday, February 4.
