Auggies drop two to Otterbein in Tucson opener

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Augsburg University baseball took opened up play at the Tucson Invitational on Sunday afternoon, dropping a pair of games to Otterbein University (Ohio) at Kino Sports Complex.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Otterbein 7, Augsburg 2; Otterbein 8, Augsburg 4

RECORDS: Augsburg 2-3 overall, Otterbein 11-2 overall

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (OTTERBEIN 7, AUGSBURG 2)
• The Auggies drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning when Adam Marshall (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) plated Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) on an RBI single up the middle.
• After the Cardinals evened the score with a run in the top of the third, the Auggies regained the lead when Salz sent a solo shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth, his third home run of the young season.
• That proved to be all the scoring the Auggies could find in game one with Otterbein adding three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to seal the 7-2 victory.
Austin Lang (FY, Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) make his collegiate debut and got the start on the mound, striking out five while walking two and allowing six hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.
Sean Littmann (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington HS) pitched 2.0 innings of relief, striking out two while allowing six hits and three earned runs.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (OTTERBEIN 8, AUGSBURG 4)
• The Cardinals got things rolling in game two with two runs in the bottom of the first.
• The Auggies responded with a big three-run second inning to take the lead at 3-2 after Carter Peterson (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) batted in Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) on a sacrifice fly and Lance Nayman (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) hit a two-run homer that scored Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS), his first home run of the season.
• After the Cardinals scored three of their own in the third to make it 5-3, Augsburg pulled back within one run in the top of the third when Tomony brought Connor Stoik (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) around to score on a single to center field.
• The Auggie offense went cold from that point on in game two with the Cardinals scoring three more unanswered to claim the 8-4 win.
Luke Johnson (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) got his first start of the season pitching for the Auggies, fanning one batter while giving up eight hits and six earned runs in 2.1 innings on the mound. Dylan Adams (SO, Windermere, Fla./Windermere Preparatory School) pitched 2.2 innings of relief, striking out one and allowing three hits and two earned runs. Owen Bernards (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) pitched the final inning, walking one batter and recording one strikeout while holding the Cardinals hitless.

• Noah Sprowls went 4-7 with five runs batted in on the day for Otterbein.
