Auggies gain late-night sweep of Cougars

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University baseball took on the University of Minnesota-Morris in a late-night doubleheader at US Bank Stadium on Tuesday, sweeping the Cougars with 6-5 and 5-2 wins to move to 2-1 on the season.

THE BASICS

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (AUGSBURG 6, UM-MORRIS 5)
• It was the Cougars jumping out to an early lead in game one, scoring three runs in the top of the first.
• Augsburg came up with a huge answer in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to take a 4-3 lead with RBIs from Lance Nayman (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS), Michael Weiss (SR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS), Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS), and Adam Marshall (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS).
Clint Mattson (SR, North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) would add to the Auggie lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single that scored Brandon Lockhart (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS). The Cougars would go on to tie the game at five each with one run each in the fifth and sixth innings.
• It was Marshall playing the hero for Augsburg in game one, stepping up to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and delivering an RBI single to score Weiss and walk it off for the Auggies.
Jake Skogrand (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) made the start on the mound for Augsburg, allowing four earned runs in five innings of work. Manny Weiss (FY, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) made his collegiate debut and earned the win in relief, pitching two innings with one strikeout and one earned run.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (AUGSBURG 5, UM-MORRIS 2)

• Augsburg drew first blood in the second game with Michael Weiss coming around to score on a Morris error in the top of the third. Just one at bat later, Salz sent a ball over the fence in center field for his second home run of the young season, giving the Auggies a 3-0 lead.
• After the Cougars scored two in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to one, Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) put Augsburg back up by two with an RBI single that brought Stoik around to score. Salz would add one more insurance run for Augsburg with a sacrifice fly that scored Noah Thomas (SR, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) in the top of the seventh.
Vinny Rupp (FY, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) dazzled in his collegiate debut on the mound, earning the win after striking out seven while allowing just two runs in six innings of work. Jacob Henry (FY, Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also impressed in his first career appearance, picking up the save with a strikeout in one scoreless inning on the hill.

• Adam Baumann finished the day 2-5 with a run scored for the Cougars.

• The Auggies will travel to Tucson, Arizona for eight games next week, starting with a doubleheader against Otterbein University on Sunday (3/12) with first pitch scheduled for 10 am (Central Time).
