Auggies fall to Oles in resumption of halted game

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University baseball team wrapped up its 2023 campaign with the completion of its halted game against St. Olaf College originally started on April 19, falling 15-12 to the Oles in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

THE BASICS
SCORE: St. Olaf 15, Augsburg 12
LOCATION: Northfield, Minn.
RECORD: Augsburg 9-24 overall (6-14 MIAC); St. Olaf 15-17 overall (10-8 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED (SUSPENDED IN 7TH ON 4/19)
• St. Olaf struck first again in game two with a run in the first and three more in the second, but the Auggies responded in a big way with a six-run third inning. Stoik picked up two RBI on a single through the right side while Gage also batted in two runs with a double down the right field line. Carson Tomony (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison East HS) and Jake Skogrand (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) also brought one run around to score each in the inning.
• Trailing 6-4, the Oles nearly matched the Auggies with five runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead at 9-6.
• Drew Jenkins (FY, Farmington, Minn./Randolph HS) recorded the first RBI of his career in the fifth, singling to right field to score Adam Marshall (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and make it a two-run game at 9-7. The Oles put two more on the board in the bottom half of the inning to give themselves a four-run cushion.
• Continuing to respond as they had all game, the Auggies scored four runs in the sixth to knot the game back up at 11 each. Gage notched his third RBI of the game with a groundout that scored Michael Weiss (SR, Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) and Marshall followed him up with a double down the left field line that plated both Steven Salz (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Stoik. Skogrand provided the final run of the half inning with a fielder's choice that scored Marshall.
• The Oles regained the lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 15-11 before the game was halted due to darkness.
• Vinny Rupp (FY, Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline HS) pitched the first 2.0 innings for the Auggies, allowing nine hits and six runs with two strikeouts. Sean Littman (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington HS) and Kell Piggott (FY, Superior, Wis./Superior HS) combined to pitch the next three innings, allowing three and five runs, respectively.

RESUMPTION OF GAME (5/8)
• The game picked up where it left off with Augsburg batting in the top of the seventh inning when it was resumed on Monday, May 8.
Connor Stoik (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) gave the Auggies their first baserunner of the day when he drew a walk, later advancing to third on a fielding error following an at bat by Salz. With runners on the corners, Ty Gage (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) pulled the Auggies within three with an RBI single to left-center field. Both Salz and Gage were stranded, however, as the inning ended with a strikeout and a fly out.
Luke Johnson (SR, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS), who was Augsburg's pitcher when the game was initially halted, continued to pitch for the Auggies, retiring the side in order in the seventh to keep the deficit at three.
• The Auggies used a single by Jenkins and a double by Weiss to once again put two runners on base, but they failed to capitalize with a ground out ending the scoring threat.
• Johnson pitched another fine inning in the eighth, retiring three of four batters faced to keep the score at 15-12.
• With two outs in the top of the ninth, Marshall kept the Auggies alive with a double to center field. The St. Olaf pitching staff came through one final time, however, recording the game's 27th out to take the game 15-12.
• The final line on Johnson was three hits and one run with four strikeouts in three full innings, two of which came after the game's resumption.
• The Auggies tallied a whopping 19 hits in the game, just one shy of their season high. Weiss finished the game 4-for-6 in what will go down as his final collegiate appearance. Marshall and Jenkins had three hits each while Salz, Gage, Tomony, and Skogrand all had two.

FOR THE FOES
• St. Olaf's Sam Lavin was 4-for-6 at the plate, driving in four runs.
