Janneh scores twice in Auggie draw

McMINVILLE, Ore. -- Kebba Janneh (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) scored a pair of first-half goals for Augsburg University, as the Auggies opened their 2023 men's soccer campaign with a 2-2 tie at Linfield University on Friday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Linfield (Ore.) 2
LOCATION: Linfield Soccer Complex, McMinville, Ore.
RECORDS: Augsburg 0-0-1 overall, Linfield 0-0-1 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies surrendered a goal in the seventh minute, but Janneh tied the game for the Auggies on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box following a Linfield handball. Janneh slid his shot just to the right of the defensive wall, bending it to the right corner of the net for his 21st career goal.
• Janneh scored off of another set piece in the 31st minute, putting home a loose ball following a corner kick on a rising shot to the top left corner of the net.
• Linfield tied the game with 3:22 left to play in the game on a sliding rebound shot in the six-yard box following a free kick from the right edge. Augsburg had a chance on an attack immediately after the Wildcats goal, but a shot from Janneh slid wide of the net.
• Augsburg outshot Linfield by a 16-8 margin in the game, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on-goal. Mizael Harris (SO, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) had five shots, including three on-goal, for the Auggies.
• Goalkeeper Oscar Herrera (SR, Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had one save.

FOR THE FOES
• Angel Hernandez scored in the seventh minute for Linfield, while Max Testa tied the game in the 87th minute.
• Dylan Watkins had five saves in net.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "It was difficult to deal with the early deficit, but to get back on top through Kebba was really important for the group to know they can come from behind."
• "It was a silly foul that led to their game-tying goal, but we need to get a lot tougher in the box on set pieces and defend with much more vigor and determination. To concede both goals that way was frustrating."
• "There were bright spots and areas for growth like every game, but this one felt like a loss. Had we buried any of our clear chances, we would still be having the same discussion, just with a smile."
• "Linfield were great hosts and they have something going here. This is a different program than it was a few years ago. We wish them the best."

UP NEXT
• Augsburg finishes its Oregon trip on Sunday (9/3) at 1 p.m., with a game at George Fox in Newberg, Ore.
