Auggie volleyball swept by fourth-ranked Eagles

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University volleyball team hosted the fourth-ranked University of Northwestern-St. Paul in nonconference action on Wednesday evening, falling in straight sets to the Eagles at Si Melby Hall.

FINAL SCORE: Northwestern def. Augsburg 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24)

RECORDS: Augsburg 9-6 overall, Northwestern 9-2 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After Augsburg jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set, the Eagles claimed the following 10 points to take a commanding 13-6 lead that they would not relinquish as they went on to claim a 25-20 win.
• Augsburg controlled most of set two, working out to a 20-14 advantage. The Eagles put together a massive rally from that point, claiming 11 of the final 12 points, including nine in a row, to take the set 25-21 and go up 2-0 in the match.
• In set three, Augsburg once again held a narrow advantage for a majority of the set. With Augsburg leading 24-21 at set point, the Eagles managed one final rally with five straight points to win the set 26-24 and complete the sweep.
• The Eagles featured the more efficient attack, hitting .309 to Augsburg's .237. Each team had six service aces, and Augsburg had 56 digs to Northwestern's 41.
Emily Kaup (JR, Omaha, Neb./Duchesne Academy) led the charge for the Augsburg attack, hitting .243 and logging a team-high 14 kills along with 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Madison Gully (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) made the most of her attack opportunities, finishing with nine kills while hitting an astounding .692.
Torrie Rehder (JR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) was the defensive anchor once again for the Auggies, leading the team with 20 digs in the match.

FOR THE FOES
• Abby Glanzer led all players with 19 kills in the match, and Ari Schmidt was second on the team with 12 kills for the Eagles.

• Augsburg will host St. Catherine University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday (9/29) at 7 pm.
