Auggies fall to Wildcats in four sets

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University volleyball team hosted St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference battle on Friday evening, falling in four sets to the Wildcats.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: St. Catherine def. Augsburg 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-16, 28-26)
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 9-7 overall (1-2 MIAC), St. Catherine 8-4 overall (2-1 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 18-12 in the opening set, the Auggies put together a small run to pull within three. That proved to be all they could do, as the Wildcats took six of the final seven points to take the set 25-17.
• The Auggies flipped the script in set two, taking a 6-0 lead and never looking back. The Wildcats battled to keep it close and managed to tie the set at 17-17, but Augsburg finished strong with eight of the final 11 points to take the set 25-20 and even the match.
• After a relatively easy 25-16 win for the Wildcats in set three, Augsburg was significantly more competitive in set four. The Auggies led by as many as eight at 14-6, but the Wildcats battled back once again to tie the set at 18 each. The two teams went back and forth from there before the Wildcats were finally able to put the match away on their fourth match-point opportunity.
• Neither team was particularly efficient on the attack, with St. Catherine narrowly outhitting Augsburg .164 to .133. Augsburg held a 47-44 advantage in kills and a 74-60 advantage in digs, but the Wildcats held a 13-5 edge in blocks and a 12-6 edge in service aces.
Bri Van Well (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) led the team with 13 kills and nine digs while hitting .125. Madison Gully (JR, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) ranked second on the team with eight kills and three digs while Emily Kaup (JR, Omaha, Neb./Duchesne Academy) was third on the team with seven kills and three digs.
• Libero Torrie Rehder (JR, Goodhue, Minn./Goodhue HS) led the defensive effort, logging 26 digs to lead all players in the match.
• Angel Vo (JR, Blaine, Minn./Mounds View HS) led the team with 20 set assists while Jovial King (FY, Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia HS) was just behind her with 19.

FOR THE FOES
• Tiffany Telez led the Wildcats with 11 kills in the match, also anchoring the defensive effort with 15 digs.
