MINNEAPOLIS --
Megan Hensel (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) and
Grace Dickerson (SO, Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) scored goals for Augsburg University, both assisted by
Jayla Ponce (SR, Kuna, Idaho/Kuna HS), as the Auggies claimed a 2-1 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday evening.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, Gustavus 1
LOCATION: Edor Nelson Field, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 7-1-2 overall (2-1-2 MIAC), Gustavus 6-4-0 overall (2-3-0 MIAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg scored a pair of first-half goals, both on opportunities created by Ponce, the MIAC's leader in assists with nine. In the sixth minute, Ponce played a give-and-go with Hensel, driving to the left corner of the six-yard box. Her pass to the right deflected off Gustavus defenders, and Hensel slammed home the loose ball for her fourth goal of the season.
• Dickerson scored her first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute. Ponce worked her way into the 18-yard box, making several moves around Gustavus defenders. Her feed in the box was again tapped by a Gustavus defender, and Dickerson pounced on the ball for the goal.
• Augsburg was outshot by an 8-7 margin in the game, and the teams were nearly even in possession time. But Augsburg's quickness in its attack, along with a stout defense, preserved the victory. Augsburg's defensive foursome of
Abby Rosebur (SO, South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS),
Dani Wagner (SO, Savage, Minn./Shakopee HS),
Malia Neumann (JR, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and
Samantha Meyer (JR, Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) all played the full 90 minutes, denying Gustie opportunities for shots on-goal. Of the Gusties' eight shots, just two were on-frame.
• Goalkeeper
Iz Shuster (SR, Waconia, Minn./Waconia HS) had one save in the win.
FOR THE FOES
