Auggies fall to Wildcats 68-56

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University women's basketball team returned home to host St. Catherine University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening, falling to the Wildcats 68-56 at Si Melby Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both teams spent time with the lead in the game's opening frame, but it was St. Kate's holding a 15-14 edge at the first break. The Auggies regained the lead three separate times in the second quarter, but the Wildcats once again managed a narrow lead at 29-26 as the teams headed to the locker rooms at halftime.
• The Wildcats dominated the third quarter, outscoring Augsburg 26-12 to take a commanding lead into the final frame. The Auggies briefly cut the deficit to nine points at 62-53 with 1:51 to play, but it proved to be all they could do as the Wildcats restored the double-digit lead to secure the win.
• The Auggies won the turnover margin with 15 turnovers to the Wildcats' 18, turning that margin into an 18-10 edge in points off turnovers. Augsburg also held narrow advantages in second-chance points (13-11) and fast break points (7-5).
Anja Smith (SR, Keawaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) led the Auggies with 19 points on 8-of-20 shooting, also adding team highs in rebounds (eight) and steals (five).
Katie Manecke (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) matched her career high in points with 15 on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting, including hitting both of her attempts from beyond the arc. Amira LaDuke (SO, Cass Lake, Minn./Cass Lake-Bena HS) scored nine points and Kalena Myers (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) added five points and seven rebounds.
 
FOR THE FOES
• The duo of Hattie Fox and Greta Schimnowsk led the Wildcats with 15 points each.

UP NEXT

• Augsburg will host Macalester College on Saturday (1/13) at 1 pm in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's teams.
