HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies started the game hot, quickly working out to a 16-6 lead with 1:22 remaining in the first. As the buzzer sounded, it was Augsburg maintaining a 17-11 lead. The Auggies led wire-to-wire in the second, holding a 27-22 lead at halftime.
• Augsburg's lead dwindled as low as three in the third quarter, but they managed to maintain it throughout as they headed to the fourth up 42-35. After trailing for the entirety of the quarter, the Scots made it interesting with a layup that made it 48-47 with just 14 seconds left in regulation, but Augsburg responded just four seconds later with a pair of free throws from
Melanie Delestrez (SO, Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) that would give the Auggies the three-point lead that would hold until the final buzzer.
• Turnovers played a massive role in the game's outcome, with Macalester committing 24 turnovers to Augsburg's 11. That lopsided margin turned into an even more lopsided result on the scoresheet, with Augsburg outscoring Macalester 26-8 in points off turnovers.
•
Anja Smith (SR, Keawaskum, Wis./Saint Mary's Springs HS) finished as the scoring leader with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go along with five rebounds and three steals.
