Auggies survive for OT win over Scots

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University men's basketball team hosted Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, surviving for a thrilling 75-74 win over the Scots in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After seven lead changes in the opening 10 minutes, the Auggies settled down and controlled the pace of play for the following 10 minutes, leading by as many as seven before carrying a 39-35 lead into halftime.
• The Scots slowly chipped away at the Augsburg lead in the early minutes of the second half, tying the game at 46 each before jumping on top and pushing the lead as high as nine at 59-50 with 7:03 to play. The Auggies responded with a 9-0 run of their own to knot the game up at 59 each. After the Scots regained the lead and held it until the final seconds of regulation, a putback layup by Austin Jentzen (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn. St. Michael-Albertville HS) with just 24 seconds on the clock tied the game at 67, eventually sending it to overtime.
• Trailing 74-73 with 53 seconds left in overtime, Elias Batala (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) gave the Auggies the lead for what proved to be the final time with a pair of free throws with 19 seconds on the clock. The Scots inbounded the ball and attempted a three-point shot for the win as time expired, but the shot was off the mark and the Auggies hung on for the one-point victory.
• Augsburg was more the more efficient team shooting the ball, knocking down 26 of its 59 attempts (44.1%) while the Scots connected on 26-of-64 (40.6%). The Auggies dominated the lane, outrebounding the Scots 39-33 and outscoring them 34-12 in the painted area.
Colin Meade (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) put in a strong all-around performance, leading the Auggies with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting and adding six rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Jentzen had one of his strongest games as an Auggie, knocking down seven of his nine shots for 16 points and pulling down eight rebounds.
• Batala also finished with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting while leading the team with three steals. Trent Gomez (FY, Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) reached double figures with 10 points and three rebounds, and Will Blascziek led the team with nine rebounds.

FOR THE FOES
• Coby Gold led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting, also notching the double-double with 10 rebounds.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will make the trip to Moorhead, Minn. for a MIAC battle against Concordia-Moorhead in the second game of a doubleheader with the women's teams scheduled for a 7:15 pm tip.
