Hot shooting propels Auggies to dominant win

MINNEAPOLIS – Hitting their most three-point field goals in a game in more than four full years, the Augsburg University men's basketball team used efficient shooting to take down the College of St. Scholastica 101-63 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Auggies wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard in the first half, hitting nine threes and leading by as many as 21 points before carrying a 42-30 lead into halftime. The Augsburg advantage continued to expand throughout the second half, peaking at 38 points by the time the final buzzer sounded.
• The Auggies dominated nearly every statistical category, outshooting St. Scholastica 61.4% (35-of-57) to 35.9% (23-of-64) and outscoring them 30-12 off turnovers. The Auggies also won the battle in the lane with a 43-33 advantage in the painted area, and boasted the better reserves with a 28-20 edge in bench points.
Will Blascziek (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) finished atop the box score with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a 5-of-7 performance from beyond the arc, while adding four rebounds, a block, and a steal. Trent Gomez (FY, Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, hitting 3-of-6 from deep, also adding two steals and two rebounds.
Colin Meade (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) rounded out the starters in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Caden Sullivan (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) had the strongest game of his young career as an Auggie, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting in just 15 minutes off the bench.
• Defensively, Austin Jentzen (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn. St. Michael-Albertville HS) was a force with five blocks, the most by an Auggie player since Cory Polta had six in a game against St. Thomas in 2012.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

• Augsburg's 14 blocks as a team were its most in a single game since at least the 1998-99 season.
• The Auggies' 17 made three-pointers were just one shy of the school record 18, marking the sixth such performance in school history, with the most recent occurrence in January of 2020.
• The 38-point win was Augsburg's first 30-plus point victory since February 16, 2022, when they topped Macalester 94-64.

FOR THE FOES
• Andre Crockett Jr. and Tanner Thomson finished with 12 points each for the Saints.

UP NEXT
• The Auggies will take on Gustavus Adolphus College on the road at 3 pm on Saturday (1/20) in the second game of a doubleheader with the women's teams.
