Auggies edged 4-3 by Johnnies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The Augsburg University men's hockey team took a 3-2 lead into the third period, but two Saint John's University goals in a 15-second span gave the Johnnies a 4-3 win in the opener of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint John's took a 1-0 lead with a goal 6:39 into play, but Augsburg tied the game on a goal from Nick Catalano (SO, Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead Union HS) at the 8:17 mark, scoring his sixth goal of the campaign on a rebound off a deflected shot by Landon Parker (FY, East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks HS), with Kyler Yeo (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) gaining the second assist.
• Parker then gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead with his fourth goal of the season, taking a long pass from James Miller (SO, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and sprinting in for the score. Gunnar Williams (FY, Elgin, Ill./University of Nebraska HS) had the second assist.
• In the second period, the Johnnies tied the game with a power-play goal, but Augsburg took the lead back with a goal at the 13:41 mark by Erik Palmqvist (SR, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet), who fired a wrister from the point brom Williams and Logan Kons (SR, Niles, Ill./Niles West HS).
• Augsburg was outshot by a 42-28 margin in the game. Auggie goalie Samuel Vyletelka (JR, Zilina, Slovakia/Grammar School of St. Francis of Assisi) had 38 saves.

FOR THE FOES
• Lewis Crosby and Matt DeRosa scored the first two goals of the game for the Johnnies, with Garrett Smith and Jackson Sabo scoring 15 seconds apart midway through the third period.
• Saint John's goalie Jon Howe had 24 saves.
