Auggies drop 4-2 decision to Pointers

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University men's hockey team played host to the eighth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference bout on Saturday evening, falling 4-2 to the Pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Pointers opened the scoring with a goal at 16:51 in the first period, later expanding the lead with a goal at 6:39 in the second period.
• The Auggies cut the lead in half later in the second when Luke Mountain (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) managed to control a bouncing puck off a face-off and bury it in the back of the net. Cade Stibbe (SO, Fardo, N.D./Fargo Davies HS) and Landon Parker (FY, East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) each picked up assists on the play.  
Erik Palmqvist (SR, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet) would give the Auggies an equalizer at 12:28 in the third period, taking a centering feed from Peyton Hanson (SO, Hudson, Wis./Hudson HS) and beating the netminder to tie the game at 2-2. Daniel Chladek (SR, Anaheim, Calif./Canyon HS) was credited with a second assist on the play.
• The Pointers went on to score the eventual game winner just over two minutes later, also adding an empty net goal in the games final minute to secure the win.
• As a team, the Auggies were outshot 35-25 in the game, with Tommy Carls (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) leading the way with three shots on goal for Augsburg. The game contained 62 face-offs, with each team winning 31.
• Augsburg goalie Samuel Vyletelka (JR, Zilina, Slovakia/Grammar School of St. Francis of Assisi) had 31 saves in the contest, his eighth game this season with 30 or more saves.

FOR THE FOES
• Dawson Sciarrino, Sean Bunting, Fletcher Anderson, and Conor Witherspoon each scored for the Pointers, who are currently the No. 8-ranked team in the USCHO.com Division III national poll.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, hosting Bethel on Friday (1/12) at 7 pm.
