Auggies run off 30 straight points to hang onto Hammer

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring 30 unanswered points in the second and third quarters, the Augsburg University football team maintained its hold on "The Hammer" traveling trophy with a 37-27 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Hamline University on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Trailing 14-7 after one quarter, Augsburg ran off 30 straight points to take a 37-14 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Auggies scored points on its first six drives of the game -- five touchdowns and one field goal. Augsburg was outgained by a 392-314 margin by Hamline, but the Auggie defense forced three Hamline punts, an interception and a turnover on downs.
• Returning to the starting lineup after missing three games due to injury, quarterback Ryan Harvey (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) completed 24-of-28 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns --  a 26-yarder to Tyrone Wilson (JR, Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS), a six-yarder to Wilson in the third quarter, and a 12-yarder to CJ Ritchie (SO, Blaine, Minn./Irondale HS) in the fourth quarter. Harvey also rushed for a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
• Wilson caught five passes for 53 yards, and Ritchie caught four passes for 52 yards. Tyrique Givance (SR, Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) caught six passes for 54 yards.
• Running back Will Smith (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) rushed 18 times for 68 yards and a touchdown, a two-yarder in the second quarter. Nathan Wangensteen (JR, Chisholm, Minn./Chisholm HS) kicked a 27-yard field goal to end the first half.
• Defensively, Joe Zachow (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) led the way for the Auggies with 11 tackles (six solo). Darnell Harper (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) had seven tackles (three solo), and Hamsa Kahin (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Edina HS). had six tackles (five solo), with 2.0 tackles for-loss and a sack. Marcus Kimbrough (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) had an interception for the Auggies.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The win was the fifth straight for Augsburg over Hamline in the battle for "The Hammer" traveling trophy. Augsburg has won 11 of the last 14 meetings between the two schools.
• Since "The Hammer" trophy game was established in 2005, Augsburg is now 15-4 in the teams' 19 meetings.

FOR THE FOES
• Alejandro Villanueva completed 16-of-24 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown for Hamline, a 65-yard pass to D'Nari Adams in the first quarter. He also caught a three-yard touchdown pass on a halfback option pass from Dawson Schaffer in the fourth quarter. 
• Adams caught seven passes for 131 yards. Dawson Schaffer caught four passes for 131 yards.
• Nicholas Vasko rushed 12 times for 38 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
• Croix Zacharias and Elijah Gingras had nine tackles each for the Pipers.
