Late goal propels Auggies to huge MIAC victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tomas Menna (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) scored two goals, and Mizael Harris (JR, Happy Valley, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) scored a goal with 4:07 left in the game, lifting Augsburg University to a 3-2 win over Carleton College in an important Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, Carleton 2
LOCATION: Si Melby Hall, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 9-3-5 overall (3-1-4 MIAC), Carleton 9-4-3 overall (4-4-0 MIAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tied 2-2 entering the 86th minute, Harris scored his fifth goal of the season in dramatic fashion. Remus Repcak (SO, Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) drove the ball from the right wing into the 18-yard box, tapping it forward to Muhammed Keita (JR, Farato, Gambia/Nusrat Senior HS). Keita was unable to get a shot off facing multiple Carleton defenders, but found an open Harris to the left, who eluded a defender and sent a low left-footed shot past the Carleton goalkeeper for the go-ahead goal.
• Menna claimed his third career multi-goal game, with his goals bracketing a pair of penalty kick goals by Carleton. Menna scored on a give-and-go from Chakong Vang (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) in the 22nd minute, and netted his seventh goal of the campaign in the 66th minute. Repcak sent a beautiful pass from the right wing into the six-yard box, which was collected by Harris, and his centering pass was slammed home by Menna.
• Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 17-14 margin and held a 57-to-43-percent possession advantage in the game, but the Auggies had a 9-4 advantage in shots on-frame. The Auggie defense held firm throughout, with center backs Zachariah Sherian (SO, Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) and Jeffrey Richter (JR, Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep HS) joining center midfielder Joseph Swallen (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) in playing the full 90 minutes.
• Goalkeeper Frankie Pinto (FY, Chicago, Ill./Maine South HS) had two saves to improve to 7-3-5 on the season.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• With the victory, Augsburg keeps its hopes alive for a berth in the six-team MIAC postseason playoffs. With two conference games remaining in the regular season, Augsburg now sits in fifth place with 13 conference points, a point ahead of both Carleton and Hamline and three points ahead of Saint John's. Gustavus and St. Olaf lead the league with 20 points each, followed by Bethel with 18 points and Macalester with 15 points.

FOR THE FOES
• Owen Flanagan scored on a penalty kick for Carleton in the 39th minute, and Ben Pennell scored on a penalty kick in the 64th minute.
• Carleton goalkeeper Daniel Linder had six saves.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• "To concede two penalties, one of which was a mystery, and then come back to win showed our grit and resilience. I was so proud of the guys never giving in. We were up against it for large parts of the game, but in the closing minutes, we were everything we needed to be."
• "Tomas Menna put on an incredible performance tonight. His ability to hold the ball and create goal-scoring moments was outstanding. He's worked so hard for this, so it's fitting he is getting rewarded for his long-term commitment."
• "Chakong Vang was so important for our team tonight, as Zachariah Sherian had to drop for a suspended Jakob Mohrlok. He was great at the '6' and I am so happy for him. Jeffrey Richter was outstanding as he led the line tonight. He covered for everyone and even created a good scoring chance."
• "Mizael could have had a bundle of goals tonight, but the important thing is that he didn't get frustrated -- he moved on each time and kept going and eventually set up Menna before winning the game for us with a goal very similar to the one he missed against Saint John's. That shows how much he's grown and learned -- and he's another guy that puts in the extra work, so it's a matter of time before he'd get rewarded.
• "These were really important points in a tight MIAC playoff race, but we must move on immediately and go again tomorrow. Getting better is all that matters to us, and if we keep focused on that, the rest will fall in place as it should."

UP NEXT
