Bati wins regional, reaches nationals for 2nd time

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Mohammed Bati (JR, Dodola,Ethiopia/GAP School) will compete at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country National Championships for the second time in his career, after winning the individual title at the NCAA Division III North Regional, held on Saturday at Carleton College.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Bati claimed the regional title, the first of his career, with a 24:20.6 time over the 8,000-meter men's race, claiming the title by 9.7 seconds over the second-place finisher, Aidan Matthai of Wisconsin-La Crosse, in the 220-runner men's race.
• By winning the regional title, Bati has qualified to compete at next Saturday's (11/23) NCAA Division III National Championships, which will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Bati finished in seventh place in the 2022 regional, qualifying for the national meet for the first time, while placing 66th at last year's regional.
• It marks the sixth time an Augsburg men's cross country runner has qualified for the national championships, and Bati now joins Brent Haglund (2008, 2009) as Auggies who have qualified for two national meets. Micheale Tesema competed at the national meet in 2012, and Dan Spies competed at the 1996 national meet. It's the first time an Auggie men's runner has won an NCAA regional meet, with the previous best finish coming with Tesema's sixth-place finish in 2012.
• Bati has now competed in 19 races in his collegiate career, claiming the individual crown in 13 of them. He has now run 14 sub-25-minute 8,000-meter cross country races in his college career.
• Augsburg finished in 26th place in the 31-team meet with 756 points.
Grayson Harris (SR, Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge HS), Augsburg's No. 2 runner throughout the season, finished in 167th place with a 28:36.6 time, his third sub-29-minute time of the season. 
• Tommy Clower (SO, Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell College) finished in 191st place in a personal-best 30:28.8, while Henry Nelson (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) finished 196th in 30:56.1.
• Kevin Romero Rivera (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Columbia Heights HS) finished in 205th in 31:46.2, Kyler Badwarrior (FY, Shakopee, Minn./V. Sue Cleveland HS) finished 210th in a personal-best 33:03.5, and Paul Yang (FY, St. Paul, Minn. Washington Tech Magnet HS) finished 211th in 33:13.6.
 
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Augsburg had three women's runners in the regional, led by Alwena Brix (FY, Plouay, France/Lycee Jean Mace, Rennes), who finished 171st in the 222-runner race in 26:32.9 over 6,000 meters.
Davi Worman (SO, Edina, Minn./Groves Academy) finished 215th in 31:33.9, and Nathalie Hain (FY, Pfaffenhofen, Germany Schyren-Gymnasium Pfaffenhofen) finished 222nd in 39:53.8.
