Bati wins third straight MIAC crown

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The records continue to fall for Augsburg University men's cross country runner Mohammed Bati (JR, Dodola,Ethiopia/GAP School). Running in a school-, meet- and course-record 23:54.6 over the 8,000-meter race, Bati became the third Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's runner ever to win three straight conference titles, claiming the crown on Saturday.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• Bati demolished the 172-runner men's field, winning the race by 54.5 seconds over the second-place finisher. His 23.54.6 time marked the first-ever sub-24-minute time run over the 8,000-meter distance in MIAC championship history, shattering the old conference 8K (5 mile) record of 24:23.0, set in 1969 by John Cragg of Saint John's.
• Bati's time also broke the St. Olaf 8K course record of 24:08.5, set by Christian Patzka of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2002. He also set an Augsburg school record for the third straight race.
• Bati became the third MIAC men's cross country runner to win the conference title three straight years, joining Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf (2012-14) and Bert Budd of St. Thomas (1949-51). Cragg of Saint John's also won three conference titles, in 1967, 1969 and 1970.
• For the fourth straight year, Augsburg finished ninth in the team competition, scoring 272 points.
Grayson Harris (SR, Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge HS) ran a personal-best 28:01.0 for Augsburg's No. 2 finish, placing 93rd overall .Henry Nelson (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) finished 135th in 30:27.1.
Tommy Clower (SO, Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell College) finished in 141st place in 30:51.4, Kevin Romero Rivera (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Columbia Heights HS) ran his first collegiate 8K race, finishing 157th in 32:03.1.
Kyler Badwarrior (FY, Shakopee, Minn./V. Sue Cleveland HS)  finished 167th in 33:35.4, Paul Yang (FY, St. Paul, Minn. Washington Tech Magnet HS) finished 169th in 34:10.0, and Pollei Buux Caliyare (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) finished 170th in 34:11.9.
 
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
• The Auggie women were paced by Alwena Brix (FY, Plouay, France/Lycee Jean Mace, Rennes), who finished 102nd in the 156-runner race in a 6,000-meter career-best 26:21.6.
Annabel Lantz (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) finished 143rd in 29:36.5, Aleka London (SO, Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) finished 146th in 30:10.2, Davi Worman (SO, Edina, Minn./Groves Academy) finished 153rd in 31:45.5, and Nathalie Hain (FY, Pfaffenhofen, Germany Schyren-Gymnasium Pfaffenhofen) finished 156th in 36:37.1.
As a team, Augsburg finished 12th in the MIAC meet with 380 points..
